It's more a mental game most the time, you can always discuss with your provider if it hurts about using a smaller speculum, they come in different sizes but they usually just default to a specific size lol

but like... if it's already in it's kinda too late to ask yeah? and idk how i would know till then since i've never had one... but yeah i assume (and hope) it won't be as bad as i think but....ew......... but google says at least it's probably <10 minutes time so that's good at least

IDK what time frame they got on google but mine took 10-20 seconds max couple ones I've had it, sometimes when the speculum is being inserted it can be difficult or hurt and you can ask to stop/take a break/ or try a different size. It's mostly just weird feeling and like a stretching sensation. As someone who's had it all with a couple babies I think a pap smear is like 3/10 awkward experience but 1~2/10 discomfort, they legit just stick a cotton swab up there and call it a day. Worst part is cleaning up after bc they usually use an ungodly amount of lube to decrease discomfort

i hope that it goes that smooth! what i've read varies greatly so i assume it's somewhat of a "we'll see when i get there". I've read comments of people saying like you that it was barely anything and ones of people who cried because it hurt and had to wear a liner home because bleeding...

also thank you for responding, always helps to hear more perspectives!

That's a situation where a smaller size speculum probably would have saved them :') unfortunately a lot of people either don't feel comfortable advocating for themselves or they have a doctor that just dont care
Hope it goes well for you girlie
(edit to add, some people don't know they can ask for something different too)

...
will i sound like a baby if i say, that was probably the worst medical experience i've ever had?

I literally failed, after a couple minutes of trying to get the speculum in, she was like "ok, lets be done. we can do it next year" (insert me not mentioning i might not have health insurance for a few years n so not do anything medical then... but i'm good with that more than ever now) (i also have like no risk factors besides having a cervix so i think that also is why she wasn't super worried about not getting it done)

and she was like "but if you feel ready we can try again in a month or two" and i'm thinking??? why would it be better then?? like tell me how to double my apparently awful pain tolerance and maybe but idk what's gonna change from now till then?? like, i'm sorry idk how to not tense up when it feels like ur stabbing me with an icepick...
(ps, yes, i'm pretty sure she used the smaller size...)

i had my first cavity and drilled tooth this year. i think i'd pick that over this...

side rant: women have rights now, why does anyone choose to have sex? like, if it hurts half that much, then i think it's not for me, no thanks. I know it's supposedly "good pain" but yeah i'm not picturing that rn. idk how humanity exists, having woman parts sucks.

i’m so sorry you’ve had that experience, that sounds awful!!  sex is not supposed to hurt tho, ofc it can be uncomfortable in some situations but generally it’s supposed to be enjoyable if you wanted it ofc..

tbf, i've never been super interested in sex so it's not like this vastly changed my opinions or feelings... but good to know it doesn't hurt like that

Where I live it is possible to do a self test in some places, either take one home or do it yourself at the place.

idk if that sounds better or worse! it would be less embarrassing but if someone who does it every day couldn't manage, idk how i could do better...

Way better for me (not for pain reasons), otherwise I would not have done it at all, as long as you know how to do it yourself. No sepculum involved. But I do not think I would recommend it if it would hurt more without a speculum. Do you know why it hurt or did the employee know?

Here is some information I found if the reasons are anxiety and muscle tension: talk to your provider about your concerns, practice deep breathing and relaxation techniques, bring a trusted support person, and use distractions like music. You can also prepare by taking over-the-counter pain relievers beforehand, dressing in a way that makes you feel comfortable, and choosing a time for your appointment when you are not on your period.
