Born in 2000 is so unsettling because everyone knows we were different as a country before and after but me, all I know is the aftermath. We had issues but its always described as this shift were we began becoming divided i guess? It's just weird to think that people weren't always this one extreme or the other kinda thing as it is now. Maybe they were idk i wasn't there

Hi. I was almost ten years old when it happened. I also live in New York State (about a 6 hour drive from NYC), so I was in school when it happened. I don’t actually remember that day. I think I blocked it out. For a long time I had tremendous guilt about that because most people have an incredibly distinct memory of founding out what was happening. According to one of my friends, our teachers turned on the tv to find out what was happening, so I imagine that I found out in my fourth grade classroom.

They closed the schools early that day, and parents came to pick up their children (at least in my area). No one knew where the next attack would occur, so the adults were terrified.

I know I watched the news (which I had never done before) for at least the next month because I can remember a couple big news scandals from that time (the Enron Scandal).

At the time, I had a cousin who had just moved to NYC three weeks earlier to start college. She was physically okay.

My mother said my brother (who was in 7th grade) started writing much darker stories in the months after it happened, and that she was quite worried about him.

I apologize if this is disjointed. This isn’t something I talk about often or find easy to talk about. I do think it’s important to talk about.

It was so tragic for the people it affected (which is/was basically everyone) that they chose to make every following generation numb to it. Which is crazy to think about

I think it was more prevalent because the adults teaching had to live through it and all of the ripples and effects that came because of it

Thats not to diminish the tragedy
But it definitely feels less real if that makes sense?
