If they use the same passwords on other websites and their data got leaked on that website then they can use that to log into other accounts

When i'm downloading stuff I largely/only use sites approved on the freemedia reddit/wiki   and I personally, don't torrent 
They also have a guide for safer browsing on there- which is linked if you want to take a look? 

you can also check have i been pwned  to check if your email or data has been in any data leaks, malwarebytes has a similar checker as well

Also I believe a shitty ass long password with mixed capital and small letters, numbers and special symbols... two factor access where you can etc.. however be aware it will also crazily inconvenience your daily life (I hate uni that wants shitty long passwords that you also have to change every year or so)

Within the EU youre under protection of GDPR so they can only retain data for clearly stated purposes and have to remove them within a certain time period if theyre no longer relevant
