when i ask professors for guidance regarding my sensory sensitivities and/or scheduling conflicts IN ADVANCE and instead of finding a solution together, they just tell me to take the course next year as if my student money isn't tied to my ECs and as if i could just always push things further???? like the sensory stuff i experience is for life??? i can't just become "normal" next year

why is it often* ethics/philosophy professors as well?? like dude i thought you cared about social justice and such since that's your career whyyyy are you acting like this

But yeah proffs are so awful at that kinda stuff a kornig the time, I suspect it’s because they’re not actually educated to be teachers

i have accommodations for my exams that i got from my student advisor. i think there's also an official person for this though, who i might contact bc i don't think they can deny accommodations for the lectures

Contact them! I think if it comes through them or has them in the cc so the proff can see ur likely going to get different answers or if you still get the same at least you have a person involved who is more willing to help make sure the conversation happens

i'm just kind of scared bc i never got officially diagnosed w autism (even though it's first mentioned in my medical files when i'm as young as 3 or 4 yo) and to my understanding generic sensory sensitivities don't qualify as a separate diagnosis or as a disability. but then again, my student advisor did give me to the accommodations for my exams when i told her, so maybe something can be done anyway?

Yeahh I don’t go to my uni disability aid people for that reason too 😭 here it’s pretty strict with certain things where you need an official diagnosis and specific papers and all that, but then for other things ull get help regardless, so it probably depends a little on the help you need n what they can provide, but I think they’ll usually at least do their best to at least come up with some options unless they suck at their jobs

Like I can get audio books for my course lit for my adhd without anything but I can’t get extended writing time on exams without a specific form that requires an official diagnosis

it's so stupid bc i've been "suspected" to be autistic throughout my entire life independently by many different professionals but my mom medically neglected me (ty for also ignoring the dentist visits mom <3), so i never got the diagnosis, which i cannot afford now as an adult. like it would have helped me sm bc now i also have to justify why i didn't get it earlier and all that stupid stuff 😭

yeah, i hope they are like that and understand that people come from different bgs/situations, which affects the ability to get things on paper. two of my past professors gave quiet workrooms by default, but unfortunately they are a minority. it feels like the discussion on neurodiversity is still at its infancy here. my uni's (student-founded) neurodiversity support/activism group hosted a debate earlier this year to raise awareness on why more support is needed but many profs were just like 🤪 ok but you won't get support in the workplace either so better get used it LOLZZ 🤪
