inspired by a topic on gsm

whats ur guys opinion on this. i personally think u can selfdiagnose a few things (like depression for intsance) without having to have the outside perspective that a psychologist has on u
i think adhd and autism are similiar in that aspect that u at least can have a very strong suspicion becuase well, u know urself and ur inner turmoil best

but also ive realized since im at work wit 19 year olds that these ppl truly go like. i saw a tiktok video abt xyz and im the same so i have this thing. so maybe im now against self diagnosis because i realized stupid ppl do exist and they shouldnt diagnose themselves and they do need the outside perspective

Honestly I approach stuff like this with less of a 'ohh what is the newest online discourse on this do we need to condemn or defend this' but rather 'what real life impact and harm can come from this'.

I think self diagnosis can be somewhat helpful if you don't have the resources to seek out a professional and there are methods and techniques to improve certain problems and symptoms without doing harm.

But there is definitely a negative impact because

a) people with abusive behaviors use a diagnosis to excuse their behavior without doing anything to improve their condition
b) social media (especially tiktok) tends to oversimplify mental illnesses and conditions and pathologize normal human behavior (which can lead to a) lol)

If you struggle and professional help is no option, please seek out reputable sources, books, studies, expert interviews (but be careful expert is not a protected term) and not mental health tiktok.

Certain conditions NEED professional intervention no matter the financial situation because people can and will harm themselves and others and that's where I draw the line. And it's hard to say where exactly this line is, especially if someone is in an active crisis.

i dont tell people i have something unless im officially diagnosed (especially with mental diagnosis) but sometimes i think i have certain things (like autism) that my doctor refuses to diagnose, but its clear that there is something off

Diagnosis is a privilege not everyone has access to or has access to in a way that is respectful to them as a person so it is a useful tool to help with ur well being when health care is not accessible to you, you just gotta be open minded about it potentially being another diagnosis than you expect and approach it with care, which obvi tik tok teens often don’t have a developed enough brain for yes, but that having become an issue is moreso a problem with society + social media as a whole so idk man

doesnt matter to me what other people do with their lives i rly dont care to think about it
i selfdiagnosed a personality disorder for myself so i couldnt judge anyways. it doesnt matter if i really have an actual pd, it just happens to fill every single trait, has the same origin, is a significant harm to my life and has the same treatment. also personality disorder science is kinda scuffed and evolving

i think it can be hard for people to see themselves clearly in a lot of cases, so i am a bit sceptical about self diagnosis. a lot of symptoms can overlap between diagnoses (although they may present themselves differently) so it can be very hard to navigate.

having so much information about stuff can be good but it can also be taken advantage of, but that ofc depends on the person accessing the information. from experience theres a line btwn using a diagnosis to help yourself (good) and using it to justify shitty behaviour (not good) and theres prob always gna be ppl on either side of that line and there's not rly a lot u can do about it except decide who u let into ur life and not i guess

idk who i quote but yes i agree theres a big difference between using a self diagnosis to help urself understand and change thigs to make ur life better and just using at as an excuse for things and not even wanting to change
