Fun fact caterpillars
Private

I just learned this 5 min ago from tiktok and did a little bit of research but before caterpillars turn into a butterfly, they first shed their skin and then harden… before metamorphosis they turn into GOOO inside the cocoon and the wildest thing that i feel like should be talked about more, is that they retain some of their memories of being a caterpillar once they turn into a butterfly even when they turn into literal goo isnt that crazy or is that just me

Idk why i thought caterpillars just build a shell around them ??

i did know about the goo part (which doesn't make it any less crazy btw like,,, WHAT..???) but they RETAIN MEMORIES??? that is actually INSANE whaaaaattttt
first off the fact that they have memories is already shocking to me  but that they keep said memories after being literal goo is ..... ????

nature can be so mindblowingly strange and amazing sometimes like wdym that just happens on our earth daily
there's so many crazy complicated processes out there that just happen all the time and we don't see or notice them 99% of the time or at all ever in our lives, like whenever i think of that im in awe

..ok help i just wrote this out and i have to add im sorry for IMMEDIATELY making this cool bug fact about bug murder, but less fun related fact  that im bringing up cuz i was recently thinking about how wild it is that a lot of people apparently don't know about this process at all:
silk is made by cooking silkworms while they're mid gooing it up inside their spun silk cocoons, because letting them complete their metamorphosis and emerge as a cute silk moth means letting them break the single continuously spun thread of their cocoon. this has led to the species being unable to live in the wild due to basically being domesticated to be mass murdered for fancy rich people fabric farming. the cocoons are obviously small so u need thousands of them to weave into fabric. humans r so fucking rude. shoutout wool and cotton

continuous thread is much much much higher quality and easier to use
this is why for example cotton shirts have huge quality differences. cheap prep methods break down the natural threads, while keeping the long threads takes more time and work. clothes with short fibres wear down much faster !
this also why clothes with recycled fibre are shit bcs the fibre is cut up and super short

the mouth thing is a thing that a lot of moths have, the life stage is just for breeding briefly and dying. but they got bred so they cant fly
