my favourite books ive read in the last few years:

fifteen dogs, andre alexis
- basic concept is 2 gods make a bet that if they give a group of dogs in a shelter human intelligence, will any of them be able to die happy.... total tearjerker but was so beautiful

confessions, kanae minato
- a school teacher gets revenge on some of her students for something !!!!!!!!! they did..... when i tell you this book is twist after twist after twist but every single one is impactful and well written and had me gasping at the end of every chapter

piranesi, susanna clarke
- a young man lives in an endless series of halls filled with water and statues. there are moments that for ME felt like they dragged on slightly, but really gorgeous writing and beautiful well depicted imagery

ive really liked "this kingdom will not kill me" by ilona andrews, but like, i do like everythng by ilona andrews ...
idk if you know the genre isekai but its basically the authors take on that manga/anime genre. the female lead gets transported into her favourite book series thats full of complicated politics and intrigue and she wants to save her favourite characters from the cruel fate that awaits them
SLOW BURN ROMANCE  that will only really take off in book two tbh

another book i really enjoyed was  "turns of fate - isle of wyrd" by anne bishop
basically the world builkding is that there are two dimensions, the normal human one and the wyrd and theres an island where they cross over. humans can go there to get accurate tarot readings but most ppl seem to just go to gawk at "freaks" lol (the inhabitants of wyrd are mystical creatures)
the female lead works as a detective in a town close to the isle of wyrd and she has to work together with the inhabitants to investigate some cases and idk how to describe it more because its very peculiar  but it was really good and i preordered the second book lol
NO ROMANCE but hinted that there might be in book two

so both are not smut for sure but i guess they are fantasy and romance so ... knda romantasy? but not the smut type that seems to be what tiktokers call romantasy

i love horror, so:

- slewfoot by brom
an american gothic fantasy set in the era of the witch trials. very feminine rage vibes

- house of salt and sorrows by erin a. craig
a dark fairytale, bordering on psychological horror in some parts. one of the most atmospheric and unique things i've ever read.

- the hollow places by t. kingfisher
my favourite book of all time. it's hard to summarise without giving anything away but if you like liminal spaces and cosmic horror, it's a great read

honourable mention to stagtown, which is a webtoon. maybe the best piece of media i've ever consumed.

best books i've read this year are the bear and the nightingale and the priory of the orange tree
i think the bear and the nightingale was the best book i've read ever, i loved it! the themes were sooo good for me, exactly my niche, and set in russia which was very cool to explore as someone who didn't know anything about russian folklore (also i read it in winter when it was snowing, so i could really get into it hhh)

i also really enjoyed the cruel prince  it's such an easy read and kind of cringey but i went in completely blind and was very surprised by it and it was fun so i actually gave it 5/5

I wish those were my vibe but I have DNF'ed the bear and the nightinggale 3 times. I just couldn't get into it (EVEN AS MUCH I WANTED TO. THIS IS A TRAGEDY FOR ME). I had priory and sold it bc uhm.. it also just are missing something for me that makes me genuinely want to read it even if its probably an amazing book.

I didn't love TCP. Kinda DNF'ed it at book one :/ But I would probably love it as a movie\series, just not in book shape. I'm weird about that.

ALSO HAVE YOU SEEN THIS BC I THINK THIS WAS REALLY FUN I LOVE FANDOM

i personally loved his style. if you ever read The Crucible, Slewfoot's style feels like a more modern, palatable take. but yeah it was a very atmospheric read and as a woman it was pretty empowering as well, i think the author handled some pretty heavy themes very tastefully

i swear im gonan pick up priory one of these days again uuugh it was getting exciting when i stopped i shouldnt have put it away now its so had to get myself to start again

another book i just thought of
the clockwork angel series by cassandra clare
i dont care for the rest of her shadowhunter stuff and you dont need to know anything abt the universe for the books because they are set way  before all the other books of cassandra clare (in like 1800 something in london) and what u do need to know gets explained in the books. i just really really love the female lead shes so awesome lol and i like the 1800ths setting its fun

a similiar book because its also set in 1800 london is  is half a soul by olivia atwater
ive read it a few times lol
this is from the blurp
It's difficult to find a husband in Regency England when you're a young lady with only half a soul.

Ever since she was cursed by a faerie, Theodora Ettings has had no sense of fear or embarrassment - a condition which makes her prone to accidental scandal. Dora hopes to be a quiet, sensible wallflower during the London Season - but when the strange, handsome and utterly uncouth Lord Sorcier discovers her condition, she is instead drawn into dangerous and peculiar faerie affairs.

its fun because her aunt and everyone else is always so concerned by  whats proper for a ladx and how to find a good match and go to balls and she just wants to solve a mystery and doesnt give a fuck because of her affliction and its quite fun at times how they appease the aunt

also the book felt like it didnt intend to but showed a goodd representation of autism hahaha
