Hmm, I guess some see it as a sort of "eye for eye" kind of thing. I don't know if you want to elaborate, but in what way do you think that they're the same?

If anyone is familiar with Max Weber, he coined the term monopoly on violence, which refers to the modern idea of the state as being the only entity that can legitimately use force (for example by imprisoning people). Using that logic, you could argue that it is indeed acceptable for the state to have the ability to mete out even capital punishment.

Yeah, I see. I think that kind of logic is pretty common - if you have killed a lot of people, everything should be done to prevent you from doing it again. But some would argue that you can achieve the same thing through life imprisonment (actual life imprisonment, not the Swedish kind where you can get out after x years because the sentence is converted).

To me, there are very few crimes that are always wrong; murder is not one of them. Thus, context is essential, and I would never be able to say that murder should always be punished with a certain prison term.

Yea i think that is where i am leaning towards too, life in prison with no chance of parole (and not the 16 or so years you usually get over here).

Yeah, I employ the same kind of logic, since I would think guilt is one of the most debilitating things to feel. However, with the added statement that I do support it, in the instances where it's clear that the individual will never feel remorse; then there's no point in keeping them alive. On the other hand, suffering because you are being stripped of your freedom by spending your whole life in prison is actually not something I've considered (probably because Swedish prisons are basically hotels compared to prisons in many other countries...), so you might be right that we're better off without the death penalty.

How does that make you any better than them then? If the punishment for murder is murder then whoever completes the death penalty should then be killed themselves by someone else, and then it becomes an endless cycle of death.
