All of these are valid considerations that I struggled with myself when I started playing. It took a while to learn everything useful, but when you've done that work (or/and asked for help w the progress) it's easier.

I sent you some pd to help out with that.
Codes are mostly found in shouts on fridays (regular), one of vps social media pages on sundays (regular), news team magazine at the end of each month (regular), design appreciation posts (irregular), in topics by team members, particularly ET (irregular - mainly et gives out codes.) so as a user that's been here a while, I have the collector topic for codes followed, always keep my eyes out in the shouts and click all the teams topics that jump to the front page.
All the games sucks. We "lost" half of those we used to have in January when flash was shut down. Develope some wealth to trade is going to be the easiest and most stable way to afford things, and probably is gonna take some time if there aren't some real good codes coming up
If you consider buying credits, wait until mega credit week which is the first every month. You will get free sets that you can sell or trade beside the cr. Depending on what amount you buy and what's in the pit, you can sell for potentially a lot of cr (thousands).
At least you didn't commit fraud w cheating 👍🏻👀
Yeah but not many people would do that work. Hecc I tried to do that work and yet I've gotten nearly nowhere in FIVE years. No I never asked anyone, but I have problems asking serious questions even irl cause I'm always ignored so... Not everyone is going to have the confidence to ask people either.

Thank you for the pd it's actually really nice of you to give me that. I truly never even thought that i would ever get over the youtube star level threshold, but I managed to do that last year - I think - I don't know how to check How the levels work.
I know where to find the sunday and friday codes but I have and had no idea about the rest, I don't know who ET is and I don't know how to find where peoples posts on topics go. meh, I probably wouldn't be fast enough to get the codes anyways.
I don't think anyone really played the flash games, they were broken before flash was.
And yeah I'm not good at trading, I'm one of those little rat people that want one of everything, once I get something, I can't let go of it.
I've tried to start doing styles for people in exchange for dollar or credits so that works too, sometimes.

Technically..... I did commit fraud.... The cheat was actually a bug that I found on accident, where if you had both a window of your wardrobe and a window of the shop open at the same time, then you could put on items from the shop and reload the window with your wardrobe, and as the character reset - the clothes were on the character, so you could successfully enter the competition with the store clothes on without buying or even owning them. This was great for me because I was an always broke newbie who's only goal on the site was to get more clothes.
-I uh, still am always broke but atleast now I have clothes x-x -
However the main reason to why I did exploit it as much as I did was not really because of the profits, no, it was because It gave me the feeling of "being able to play with the cool kids" so to say. Cause I didn't own any other items than the starter ones. So it just felt really good to have a chance at being voted for actually matching the theme, and I loved to have so many options to wear cause I was initially really bummed out when I realised that I had to use my own wardrobe, unlike some other dress up games I played at the time where you get to choose between some randomly generated items instead.
I can imagine that it was really unfair to the people who worked hard to get enough money to buy their clothes so that they could participate.
Especially since I did win more often than not.... atleast the times where I was able to get into the contest in time and not be disqualified because I wanted to look perfect! I lost way to many times by just loosing track of the timer.
This bug was -as far as I know- fixed about three or so years ago.
