Norway has quite complicated history, following the black plague in the 14th century Norway was basically to weak to remain an independent country, which resulted in Norway alongside the other Scandinavian countries forming an union, Norway was under Danish rule until the end of the Napoleonic wars, in which Norway was given to Sweden. However, Norway was "independent" for a few months, which was enough for the people of Norway to meet up at Eidsvoll and write a constitution. The constitution is dated to May 17th which is why we celebrate it then. The constitution is a central factor in Norway's route to independence from Sweden.
