think agriculture, farming land of America, small towns typically pretty conservative. that's middle America. the country. the big cluster of red you see in the middle, imo those are people voting against their best interests 
then you have the big states with big cities, California, NY, IL, WA typically all on the coast and lean blue 
the midwest is pretty split, my state is midwest but we lean blue, then you have states like Iowa and michigan, both midwest but they have smaller towns that are filled with crazies wanting to kidnap and conspire against the state governor (also red leaning)


and then beyond that, they look at the states by county. many rural areas lean red while cities and towns with large colleges and uni's tend to lean blue. county's with higher population effect the results as well

the midwest states leanings are very rural vs urban imo.

chicago is gonna go blue and turn the whole state of illinois blue.
