FT: Name days!
Private
International star

In some cultures, name days are celebrated. Take Greece, for instance, where name days are more important than your actual birthday.
In Norway, possibly other countries as well, you get free food + beverage + dessert on IKEA if you visit on your name day and show ID!

Do you know when your name day is, given that you have one?
Do you celebrate your name day?

After I changed my name, I actually have no idea when my name day is. I know I don't have one in Norway anymore for obvious reasons as Finnish names aren't particularly common outside Finland.
Gonna miss free food at IKEA

I feel like this is a thing in Sweden mostly for older people, because I mean, I've never heard anyone actually celebrate "namnsdag". I don't actually have one, since the calendar says Sofia and not Sofie, but it's on the 15th of May, which is also my brother's birthday.

That is a very good question, I don’t really know actually.
i mean it’s normal that if you have birthday, you will get free food or % on it, hm. But over wise idk

Before my Finnish grandmother sadly passed away, she used to call us to congratulate us with our name days, sadly I don't remember that

Also, a lot of the names are really old fashioned (see list here), which might explain why it isn't really a thing (as far as I know) among younger people.

Never heard about getting things on birthdays but I'm generally very silent about that if I ever happen to eat out on those days, no way I'm going to have a bunch of strangers sing to me

That's definitely a thing in some places (like some restaurants in Singapore), but I don't know if it's common in Sweden.

Among older people, yes. Which young person is called Svea, Gunhild, Hjördis, Hilding, Torgny or Bengt?

I recall I was at a restaurant in Oxford on my 19th birthday (via high school) and someone celebrated their birthday and the HORROR when they sang. Thank god it wasn't for me

I actually managed to find my name day, it wasn't that hard. Laziness? Exposed.

This is my son, Volmar-Styrbjörn
