FT: National Novel Writing Month

Did you know November is the national writing event month?

This event (NaNoWriMo for short), started in 1999 and officially registered as a nonprofit in 2005. It aims to encourage people to write, provide ways to get involved and find community for writers, and inspire newbies and season authors alike to write a new novel.

The conditions are to write a 50,000 word novel (or beginning of a longer novel), between Nov 1 and Nov 31. There are no rewards (although you can get a certificate and verification on the official website). Their goal is simply to celebrate the artistry of writing and encourage new or hesitant writers to try writing even if the end result isn't perfect or published.

They do host some fundraisers and smaller events for kids during or outside November. They also provide trackers, tools, and planning whether one applies to do the complete goal or an independent goal with their own timeline or conditions.

Questions!
Have you ever done this event?
Is anyone currently trying the goal this month?
Have you ever heard of this event?
Any other thoughts? What do you think of this idea?

Bonus:
Anyone want to set some little goals and work on them together here? Maybe something like a short prompt every week and we can share our work, critique, praise, advise, etc. I'm happy to send prompts and participate if anyone wants, but if not, that's ok!

If anyone has goals already, feel free to share here too!

Happy Creating!

I shall write a prompt:

🍁🍁🍁

You are on a road trip travelling by yourself to visit family but also enjoy some well earned vacation/"you" time. You turn off into a small city. It's a pretty city town--so small it's not even on your google maps/road map. But, the trees are beautiful and the people are polite but not pushy.

Your first stop is a convenience store to stock up on some snacks and necessities. Then, it's time to turn your attention to lodgings. The shop's solitary employee directs you to the west end of town to a local motel. As you finish gathering up your purchases, the young woman running the cash register keeps looking at you as though she wants to say something yet keeps hesitating. You say goodbye, unsure if you're imagining things or if she really wanted to say something further. She doesn't say anything further, but you can see her watching you drive away.

Some people are just weird, right? You're determined not to let one awkward encounter ruin the vibe of the trip. You can see the sun setting through the trees as you turn into the parking lot of the motel at the edge of the little village. It's nothing particularly noteworthy: well kept and standard in layout but with a personal touch here or there. Is that...? Oh yeah. You remember it's only November the 1st, so it makes sense there might be Halloween decorations still up. You park and walk up to the door that says "reception." As you open the door, a small bell rings.

"Welcome." a man's voice calls from behind the counter.  "Hello, I would like a roo---....." You stop midsentence as the man turns around and you see his face.

🍁🍁🍁

What happens next? It's up to you! How does the plot go? What's the reveal?

Don't worry if you aren't an amazing writer. Have fun! Write 5 words or 500, it's up to you! Can't wait to see what happens according to everyone!

(sorry if the prompt was too long)

I thought about trying to do something real writing wise this month but i don't think it's happening...

Next year! Maybe i'll remember for next year and plan something out

I've never done this and I didn't even know it existed, but I think this can be positive and educational for people who like to write or want to become writers so they can learn how to write a longer text for a book story.

I don't think I will have time to do this right now.

Have you tried this?
Anyway, how did it feel?

I heard about it a few years ago but i've always been in the middle of college or working almost full time so i always feel to stressed to do anything about it... so no, i haven't done it sadly. I probably could have done it this year but i forgot it existed until the day i made this topic so i had no plan and didn't really feel like trying to force it a week in with no planning. maybe next year.

feel free to set your own writing goals or prompts and write something small here! Just because we can't do the big goal doesn't mean we can't enjoy writing a little this month! If you do, feel free to share; i'd love to see

same. always either super busy or forget it exists

I hope you haven't given up on writing! As the point of the even says, it's ok to write a little or a lot, big or small. It doesn't have to be perfect; it's worthwhile just to enjoy the craft and creativity and try making something!

I see. Could you write a book of poems equaling 50,000 words in total? That could be cool if you wanted to try the challenge but understandable if you'd rather do it at you own pace cause that'd be a lot

haha no pressure! You don't have to write anything or if you do you can just play around with it! It doesn't have to be perfect or even good! Think of it like sketching in art y'know. You can just try something creative or a few ideas to see what you like. Even if you don't make something amazing it's still creativity and practice.

haha i get that! Don't be discouraged by that. Everyone creates at their own pace, so the challenge isn't for everyone. The writing and creativity is the important part!
