What are browser games?

Also known by their format type (i.e. flash, html5), these are games you can play usually without download or cost. While some are multiplayer or made into more expansive games/apps, many are single player, short experiences made by small or single developers.

Examples go back as far as 1995, but the "golden" era was in general the 2000's. The shut down of the flash player changed the landscape a lot, with a major decrease (but not complete annihilation) of the game type.

There are many sites that have converted older games to playable versions or apps, emulators, or websites you can use to play the flash version. There are also modern sites that make similar styles of games like itch.io.

Flash games have a variety of genres including horror, action, puzzle, walking simulator, and almost any other or combination you can imagine.

Flash games were also a major influence in bringing the dress up genre to popularity.

What do you think?

What are/were some of your favorite browser games as a kid? Now?
Do you still play browser games? What kind/how much?
Where/how do you play flash games?
What do you like or not like in general about flash games?
(i.e. soundtrack, story, game mechanics, length, etc.)

Please discuss and share your memories and games!!

(glad someone's excited about the topic since i hadn't even published this yet)

I heard of moviestarplanet but never made an account on it. but i've been on a lot of other similar dress up websites. Glad that one is still running since lots have closed down!
*deep breath* (recolorme, ourworld, woozworld, chitchatcity, freggers, ohmydollz, marapets, dappervolk, sailorfuku, etc. yes i have no life...........)

I played a few flash games killing time after classes in school too ngl .  I played one called "the gentleman" in computer lab w/ a friend and we went around quoting "patience is a virtue" (the title of one of the tortuous platformer levels) to each other for weeks

i had two different web game gateway drugs introduced to me
one girl in first grade showed me spele dot nl (dont ask why a dutch site for i do not know) and it had a section with south korean dressup games, and that eventually led me to find dollzmania dollmakers n then of course dollzmania itself
the other one i had was my dad playing games on miniclip (theyre now a mobile game publisher rip my childhood) which led me to find my favorite browser game studio, nitrome

we never had consoles or games so my childhood gaming was all emulator rips and browser games. loved that shit so much i miss it every day

ah yes dollzmania solid dress up games

i've heard of nitrome (my friend and i played a game called nitrome must die once together), but i don't know much about them or their games

oof sad no consoles but at least you found some cool stuff. I kinda got into browser games as a kid because while we had some consoles we didn't have internet at home so short, one sitting games were nice for library time.

LOL sounds like a blast, idk if i know those games but i skewed toward adventure/darker (or dress up) games even as a child for browser. (and way to hard thus starting my saga of never finishing games)

SPEAKING OF adventure games.... lemme put my first review before i go to bed, i gotta sleep though but so excited to keep talking tomorrow (or later today for everyone else smh....)

Tower of heaven 2009-10 by Askiisoft (+ flashygoodness)
Platformer/puzzle
Pros:
Pretty pixel art aesthetic and awesome 8bit soundtrack
SECRET ENDING
level editor
Interesting storyline/vibe
Synopsis (oops forgot to put one):
You play as a young undefined person who is attempting to scale the tower of a god. He does not approve of this and makes it progressively harder by increasing the obstacles and rules you have to play by. But, why do you seek to scale the tower. Riches? Or perhaps something else entirely... Can you make it to the heavens to find out?

SUCH a treasure! Icon of my childhood flash games experience. Was SO hard to beat as a child and since i frequently played flash games at the library, the one or two times i managed to beat it took so long i never got to play with the level editor because we had to go, which always made me so sad

I also never found the secret ending as a kid so replaying it and getting to see the bonus content recently made me stupidly happy. Even if it's not a major amount of extra content, it still felt like completing something i started a long time ago

Love the soundtrack, occasionally listened to it on youtube for nostalgia
Ending art is GORGEOUS ahhhh...!!!

Also pretty sure i drew fanart of it for a vp contest or inktober years ago? but i can't find it so maybe i'm hallucinating.... (now i wanna find it... but i digress....)
