A Whimsical Field Guide To August

Today we officially enter the height of summer.
Let's take a look at all that life has to offer us this month!

The colours of August
Our monthly colour palette consists of the colours golden yellow, sun orange, leaf green and aqua blue
The birthstones of this month are peridotspinel and sardonyx.
August's birth flowers are gladiolus and poppy

August skies
This month is mainly ruled by the zodiac sign Leo, which rules from July 23rd to August 22nd.
The zodiac sign Virgo takes over on August 23d.
With Leo at the helm, August is a month of creativity, fire, confidence and warmth

There will be many astronomical events over the coming weeks.
August 12th will, depending on your region, display a magnificent total or partial solar eclipse!
America, some parts of Europe and Africa will get lucky on the night of August 27th-28th, because there will be a partial lunar eclipse visible there as well.
August is the month of the Perseid meteor shower, which will be most visible from August 11th to August 13th. So keep an eye out those nights!

August's full moon is traditionally called the Sturgeon Moon
On August 6th, the moon enters its third quarter.
The new moon starts on August 12th.
The first quarter of the moon starts on August 20th.
And the full moon will be at its peak on August 28th!

August around the world
Celebrations in August include:
Lammas on August 1st, celebrating the first grain harvest where themes like abundance, gratitude and crafts have the focus.
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on August 9th, raising awareness of Indigenous cultures, rights and communities around the world.
The Assumption of Mary on August 15th, celebrating the belief that Mary was taken into heaven.
World Humanitarian Day on August 19th, recognising humanitarian workers and the people they support during crises around the world.
Women’s Equality Day on August 26th is celebrated in the US, commemorating the day women were first allowed to vote and the continued fight for equality.

Flora and fauna
Animals most seen or active in August are beessalmondeerbutterflies and salamanders.

These fruits and vegetables are in season (according to the calendar I have at home, super cool to see each month imo!)

Little side-note: harvests and wildlife differ around the world, so this might be a little different depending on where you're from. For sure let us know if we're missing a neat animal or plant here that feels like August to you!

Folklore words of wisdom

As August, so February.
Observe on what day in August the first heavy fog occurs,
and expect a hard frost on the same day in October.
If the first week of August is unusually warm,
the winter will be white and long.
So many August fogs,
so many winter mists.
When it rains in August,
it raises honey and wine.

August side quests
Don't have any plans yet for the upcoming month yet? No worries!
Here are some fun activities you can do to experience August to the fullest:
- Watch the Perseid meteor shower
- Make an abstract painting with this month's colours
- Enjoy the last cherries of the season
- Go berry picking and make some homemade jam
- Look around for local wildlife. For an extra challenge,
try to take a picture before the animal moves away!
