I noticed some items on VP are so few in number, they're likely to be nearly unobtainable.
For example, especially for male avatars, many items (that I like) have only 10-15 available in the entire game— maybe even less. I get that exclusivity is meant to encourage people to purchase credits, but those items will essentially be unobtainable to newer members because their rarity makes their value skyrocket.
On top of that, inactive users decrease the number of items in circulation. Especially if they... literally never log in again. Having so few in supply would dramatically inflate the price in the user marketplace. See: Gaia.
So my question is, will old items ever be rereleased at any point? Do you think they should, or shouldn't be? Personally speaking, I would be more encouraged to buy credits if I knew I'd have a chance to purchase things I couldn't get because I'm a newer user.
Concerns others have brought up:
1. that's unfair! my rare items will lose value!
Yes, this is true. This is the point of deflation.
Consequently however, other rares you want will also become cheaper.
In response, I suggest taking a look at Gaia Online's limited edition business model:
"on gaia, limited edition items will not be rereleased for 6 months after they first appear in the shop. this gives someone 6 months to decide whether or not they want to buy/sell it. many people can't wait that long to get an item they really want, so they're fine with paying an inflated price for it."
2. what about competition items?
These should definitely stay exclusive/rare. No need to release prizes when the contestant worked for them.
3. stop complaining! if you work hard, you can get credits!
Yes, this is true. I could also, like, buy them. This isn't just about credits.
It doesn't matter how many credits are in my pocket if no one is willing to sell the item to begin with.
4. i guess rereleasing items for the boys would be fine, but hell no to the girls.
I mean, in the name of fairness I'd have to disagree, but if it's a compromise, I'm willing to accept that personally.
5. ugh, you're so selfish! i paid a lot of money for those items!
I think it's fair to want to keep the value of your items, but I'm sure others (not myself) would argue that
people who purposely overcharge others for those items would say the same thing of you. I reiterate: I don't think it's wrong to want to keep the value of your items. I would prefer that myself, but in this case, I'm more concerned with item availability than value loss.
6. Why not ask the designer to recolor some items instead of bringing old items back?
Tbh, this would be nice.

Some of the prices are just ridiculously high, especially if those pricey items used to be some random pieces sold in the store -- of course all competition prizes etc. should stay rare, but code prizes? Basic clothes sold in the shop? They could come back into the circulation somehow.
Maybe some of them could be competition prizes? Like: "Lookie lookie, kids, if you want this super rare outfit you better work for it!"
Or as some really limited time/amount thing, like the items could sit in the shop for 12x15min in one day (12x only because of the time zones, so that people could have a chance to grab them, did they live in the US or in Russia.)
BEFORE YOU POST ABOUT "UNFAIRNESS":
i keep seeing this brought up and i don't really understand the logic.
my problem with the "unfairness" argument is that what's fair/not fair is subjective and can change depending on which side of the fence you're on. i need something a little more concrete than that.
i could have just opened this thread up with something like "it's so unfair that i can't get these items because there's so few of them!!" but i didn't think that had any real weight. is it unfair that free items may be sold for credits just because they're rare? you can argue that that's just the way it is, but someone can EASILY think that's also "unfair".
to clarify: you're all entitled to your opinion, and that's fine, that's your right. but i won't be replying to any more posts about unfairness unless there's something that i feel needs to be pointed out. if you want a reply, please review the other pages in the thread as i've elaborated on my thoughts pretty thoroughly.
also, please don't misunderstand my tone. i'm not mad/pissed/annoyed/etc. i've noticed some people feel very strongly one way or the other, and it's not my intention to cause a fight; i simply want a nuanced discussion.
