you'd have to follow up with info to show that it meant "was"

i don't think chinese is tricky
bc it has like very little grammar and no verb tenses so
the only shitty part is the fact that every word has a character and that you're also supposed to know the pinyin so you'er basically learning two languages at once
did you study it in high school or uni? because it gets a hell of a lot trickier once you get to a certain level. Just generally how you can use 了 for so many things. And even though there's not a lot of basic grammar they have many sentence structures to remeber if you want to write certain things, really hate those, hahah.
