I considered that but, as an English language native & student, it's still specific to put that at the front of your sentence "they said". It's something hard to get mixed up really but idk. 
and sometimes non-native english speakers makes mistakes in their writing
"they said" is still specific - especially as other languages don't have gender specific pronouns etc. and to put it at the beginning of the sentence too - many who don't know the language enough to know how to use they said definitely won't know about sentence structure :/

It's not over analysing - it's how my brain works. this is what I was going to apply to university to study - it just comes natural to me.
