NOTE: THIS IS NOT, BY ANY MEANS, AN EXCUSE TO GO OUT AND HARASS ANY DESIGNERS. This thread is meant to spark polite discussion and suggestions, and all in all to give an insight into what the public wants. Keep in mind that this is only covering bases after Rowan's bases were allowed ingame, since those were supposed to be the last two modified bases Kaj would allow.
Also, please remember: respect goes both way. It may be the artist's right to release whatever they want within regulation, but if you are rude and nasty to the people giving you legitimate feedback, then people are less likely to consider your side and instead just be rude and nasty right back. This obviously also goes for the people leaving feedback- if you have something to say in reply, make it more positive/respectful than '_____'s skins are so ugly lmao', otherwise you're not actually offering anything constructive or useful.
That said, I'm bringing this up because there's another extremely posed skin in the design chat that, if released ingame, would be yet another base that only has 1-2 outfits for it. While in most situations you could just work with the items ingame to make a decent look for it, the most recent posed skins have been almost impossible to style with due to the extremities they are posed in. I figured that I would share most suggestions I've seen throughout the past few months, in hopes that you will at least take them into consideration.
1. Use the existing poses- even if you have to frankendoll them
When the ballerina pose first came out, I suggested instead that the artist use the top half of the sideways Solovey set and the bottom half of the cross-legged Rat set- that way, there would be a ballerina pose similar to what she was making that would still fit existing items ingame. When the item was first released, it wasn't even posed to match up with the sideways Solovey head, meaning that even the existing sideways hairs didn't match up to the skin. While this has now been fixed, it would save a lot of time to use the already existing resources to create something new.
2. Will this fit most items?
I admire the time and creativity put into making new bases, and obviously do not want to discourage them altogether. However, when making a new skin, you should probably consider- will this match most already-existing items?
What made the sideways Solovey and ballerina Sandie so hard to style was just how posed they were- Almost all hairs were useless with the Solovey skin due to the massive gapping in the front, and almost all items save for dresses paired with sleeveless cardigans didn't work with the Sandie ballerina due to the angle of the arms and the body. A classic, non-designer example of this is the posed Chair set- almost all backgrounds and shoes don't layer with it, meaning that only a handful of items specifically designed for it are going to work with it.
However, an example of an extremely posed skin that works with almost all items is the Kedamono skin- while almost none of the shoes fit it (due to the paws), every other item works with it, and barring the shoes it's exactly like working with the base item. The same goes for Rowan and Ennui's large skins- while a few items that were almost skintight on the base avatars were too small, there were just as many large items that might have been baggy on the base avatars that fit the large skins perfectly.
What it boils down to is this- Will the currently existing items be mostly useless to this base?
3. Will people design for it?
Probably the biggest one of all, many people forget to take into account the potential for other designers to design for it. Yes, it might be stressful to style an extremely posed skin at first, but if other designers see the base as something they could easily work with, it could actually be a benefit to the site with other item releases later on. Rowan, Rat, and Dani are just three examples of designers who's bases have caught on and influenced other people to branch out in their designs by giving a new inspiration to the site, and I hope that the currently existing bases will have as much influence later on.
Bonus: Just my opinion
(This isn't so much feedback as it is my personal opinion on posed bases- because we all haven't recieved enough of that
)
As I said before in an older thread, I absolutely do adore posed bases- However, I also feel like we have more than enough posed bases at the moment, seeing as most of them only have 1-2 outfits for them (there's a set that's currently been ingame for over two years, and still only has one outfit for it!). I feel like we need to design for these bases before we even begin to consider making new ones, otherwise the site will be cluttered with beautiful posed skins that most people will just throw away or ignore because they only have one outfit to go with them.
While some people do enjoy getting creative with these bases, the majority of people don't want to have to shuffle through their wardrobes layering tons and tons of items just to make an outfit- and I don't blame them!
TL;DR
The posed bases, as lovely as they are, are also incredibly hard to style with due to the extremities they're posed in. It would be easier on both ends to use the currently existing bases and/or to consider the currently existing items when making a new design.
