and I just put that in and it works, jpg. 
And of course make sure you're putting it in the profile background slot, not the big box at the bottom where you can write about yourself. If it still doesn't work I think you should mail a moderator - Tezzica is excellent with profiles and could probably figure it out, I'm just not sure when she last logged in.
