Hay... bc of today, and also in general because it looks like we're now going to have actually active mods.
I dont know what the actual guidelines the mods have and are acting on that are established within the team. I assume its like with other teams who have set rules for how to act and how to do your job. And this is pretty much me saying to maybe consider looking that over a bit, with the current state of VP in mind
VP now has a much smaller userbase than it used to have. Which should allow for a more nuanced moderation, and moderation focused on keeping the community both safe AND fun and pleasant. And i really think your job as moderators should be to discourage and stop fighting, harassment, and scamming, stop bad faith actors and trolls, and ensure that the few minors we do have on the site feel safe. Rather than to micromanage every single conversation/thread you see.
this is mostly in regards to mature topic discussion since its been coming up on topic since last night.and because, as i already mentioned earlier today,a while back it was expressed by etjen that it was going to be a bit more lax from now on. ( and if someone has that message copied or screenshotted pleas do share it)
So some examples to showcase what is, at least to me, very clearly different situations,
- User A has made a thread about selling their wardrobe, after a bit user B and C start chatting casually, A doesnt mind until suddenly they start mentioning something sexual/ posts a picture with very obvious sexual themes/something similar, and user A who isnt comfortable with this, tells them to stop and reports it.
vs. Someone makes a thread asking what people are gonna get up to this evening and someone replies "im gonna go to my boyfriends place and have seggs", but there arent any details about the actual sex, aka its not really a mature discussion, just a random ass casual mention that no one reported or expressed discomfort with
vs. maxwells thread saying his therapist said he needs to get laid (sorry for callout maxwell
), which doesnt rly have any details, and isnt rly truly a discussion about detailed sex act but a discussion on therapy, and users who dont want to can simply not participate in it at all.
vs. someone asking reccomendations on sex toys / positions / talking about their sexual exploits, which regardless of report should probably be in the mature content section because the whole thread/disucssion is entirely about a mature topic
Like all of these are all mentions of sexual / mature topics but u can see how theyre all different, right?
I also liked the example maxwell brought up in his thread: if user a says "im goinna do the dishes" and user b (who is on their friendlist) says "haha can you do me" as a joke
thats very obviously a joke and telling these people to take it off vp/move to mcs/delete the message etc, feels like overkill, If user A on the other hand reports this, reaches out to a mod, tells them to seriously stop, etc, then that would be time to moderate the situation, bc it migght be harassment or buillying or smth like that
And to use some examples that are not about mature content
- two people are chatting and they suddenly exchange a couple of sentences in their native language. If running it through a translator shows that theyre just talking about something that was just easier to say in that language (like smth pertaining to health care, or even like, giving example of linguistic differences), its obviously a different situation than if these two people in someone elses thread are talking in their language to exclude someone from their conversation or trash talk them.
- or two friends like having casual and insulting banter, calling each other very mean things but no one is reported and like 2 posts later theyre talking about something else.
idk man, im not looking to really discuss or argue about this, nor am i saying that mods should just let us be and let os go wild obviously, there are scenarios were action is v much required espec in regards to minors on the site being exposed to mature topics, but at the end of the day this is now a days a site for and almost exclusively populated by adults. U could prolly make an example in regards to alcohol/other drugs too but i dfont have time for writing more rn...
Im not a mod and maybe some of these scenarios should be tackled differently than i think too,,, everyones lines for what is too much are different, n thats fine, but i still wanted to like point out how things are different on a case to case basis and i just rly dont want yall to go all gsm mods on us when the site honestly has been fine with very little modding the past couple of years....
i guess the tdlr is: can yall prioritize when people actually reports issues instead of just lurking and stalking threads and waiting for a moment to go hehehe mod time, for the most irrelevant shit, like some of the old mods did and that just caused a divide between general users n the mods
cant be arsed to proofread idk if im even making sense but im going back to studying now bye
