On this topic: http://en.virtualpopstar.com/social/forum?category=2&topic=41599
there raised some questions and I have tried to answer them,
and now created this new forum topic to talk more about it.

I don't know if you guys remember but moooonths ago when I was still active we had this big discussion because of some mods swearing and such like, wtf age group are we gearing towards?  some people were like 9-20 and i'm like DUDE THAT'S A HUGE GAP.  anyway that's besides the point but i've always wondered what age group this site is supposed to be for, and i think that's why there's a lot of confusion on here about like attitudes and such.

...this site is aiming at the one's that will like it <img src='/layout/nl/images/smileys/razz.png' alt=':p'> so I think mainly 12 to 17 years old. Since I am older I like it more when 18+ users join (especially on the Dutch site off course) but fact is that most people that age think dress up communities are childish. So we try to attract some of the teen preteen (right word?) people now, and then keep them attached to VP for a longer period of time. On the Dutch gsm there are a lot more 18+users but that is only because they have been coming back for years. Also they joined gsm when they were 12-16yo. I think it would be much harder to attract older players, however financially wise they are more interesting they will spend more on average on credits

Yes I had suggested that before and I have always liked that option, because if you're gearing to both twelve year olds and twenty year olds there is a HUGE difference, both in the way they will talk and WHAT they will talk about.

For example:  Maybe I'm wrong (maybe they've changed the rules), but there's only a rule against pornographic material, not a blanket rule for all NUDITY.  As a strong believer that nudity =/= porn, older users may be in a position to post bra pix or stuff like that (I've seen it here before), maybe under a nsfw cut.  But like that's a HUGE difference from someone who is going to be posting about MLP and dolls.  I just think that a 12 year old is way different in personality than a 20 year old (I don't care how mature you are, it's true) and that it's going to fracture the community into those record labels you guys have and therefore make the main community dead.

Maby we can create a 16+ forum that users only can have access to after sending a copy of their passport and then things that are sexual related can be put over there but I don’t know it seems a little bit unfair to the younger people

Yes, Kaj!!  Work on your target audience, clean up the rules, and give us some GUIDANCE.  That's what we need, and we need it quick or else the community will become confused and we won't know what is allowed and what isn't.  I think it's great that Kaj is more hands on and I think that through him, your community will blossom.  If you also know target audience, it will be easier to rake in more users as they won't be confused about these things either.

Also halloween is all about scaring off evil spirits so heheeeheheheh that's why we dress up!  I love halloween it's the best.

And I agree that the rules are confusing but I really disagree about like separate age group forums until you know what the target audience is.  If it's 16-20, you don't need another forum and if a kid who is 12 comes on, it's their own risk.  But if the site is for 12-16, you're gonna lose a lot of your older audience (heyo, we're still here though!).  Rules need to be defined and age group defined as well.

I really never thought about it in that way what the target audience should be with the themes and such like I did not made up the themes I asked the Dutch players what would be fun themes. They suggested a lot and we voted which one's will come. So I am not aiming at anything, it is the users deciding. Same with the articles from the news of the day YOU decide what to publish not me I don’t tell them, write about this or that. Just write about what you like and might be of interest to others on this website. And yes the horror them maby was a little bit scary for the younger ones but they arent 5yo they know it is not real right

Kaj is trying to find new admins for the servers and he's becoming more involved with this community, because he's the only man working on it and paying programmers ALOT. Hiring new admins does cost funds and he's slowly balancing it out. He is getting in touch with other companies with my help to cross-promote and make this website more out there. Some things he can do straight away however some stuff needs patience, he's handling three servers on his own but this stuff does need some cleaning up and it will soon. More people have to start buying stuff from the website for it to succeed the money doesn't appear magically.

@Gala: The rules and everything else will be cleaned up and guidance will be given out soon, I promise. <img src='/layout/nl/images/smileys/smile.gif' alt='<img src='/layout/nl/images/smileys/smile.png' alt=':)'>'>

And Zee is helping me a lot with this she really deserves the credit and has been of great great use to me the past few weeks helping to make a plan.

And as I said before, I am new to this. I just created this website never even having the slightest clue about what I was stepping into. So I know for sure that I am doing things wrong, and I am learning. But I always had kind the idea of yeah well here is a cool website I create for WHO EVER like it and then adjust it along the way according to the players needs and wants. And the Dutch and English server have differences and that is no problem. Here we have some more 16+ users, and the daily news team is called different because they asked me to.

I do think this website/concept we have here has great potential. And is filling a huge gab that gosupermodel left and sites like starrdoll/i-dressup will not fill since they have only one target. Earn as much as possible trough advertisement revenue. Our target is all about being the best website so users are willing to pay for it with the manager/sponcor memberships. HOWEVER, as great as I/we think this website is, that will not get more users over here it really needs to be the worth of mouth and I must tell you honestly when I started this site in the Netherlands I thought it will attract more users without any effort thanks to worth of mouth but it isn’t happening and I don’t get it at all. And spending money on advertising is also doing not much good it cost way more than the returns are so yeah I am starting to get desperate and can use all the help to create a good strategy.

So, if the audience is at "whoever wants to join" you should have precautions on things like swearing.

I mean, just as an example, the horror theme week we showed a scary film. And I think the one we chose was certificated 15 in the UK. because you don't have "you must be over this age to join" your content needs to be suitable for all ages. I know as an event team we did write the certificate in of the film so if the users watched it, it was at their own risk. However, if a parent saw their 9yo watching a certificated 15 film on the internet which was linked through this website, which is an all ages website, they could actually take it further because there are no precautions for things like that, regardless of the fact it was pointed out by one of your users as not being appropriate for their age.

On Habbo Hotel you have to be over the age of 13 and if you lie about your age, that is your own fault if you get hurt or are exposed to something that isn't for a younger age group, so if a parent doesn't like what they see, they cannot sue or attempt to shut down the website if their child is under the age of 13.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that if you are targeting this website for all ages there has to be precautions for the younger users. For instance, an "older" forum. Even if it isn't fair on the younger users, you are protecting yourself financially and if they lie, then that is their own fault for being exposed to something that isn't suitable for them, and you are not to blame.

Most websites now have precautions. Because of sue happy people.

You cannot sue a website because it is showing content placed on YouTube, then they need te sue YouTube, anyway with that movie 15yo you showed it is an parental advisory right. I thought it was best to keep this site for all ages but that doesn’t mean we always need to adept to the younger ones they can also adapt to the older ones, teenagers are growing up really fast today and with all shit going on on TV, free to watch for anyone who does even care about parental advisory it’s just bullshit anyway right

I actually agree with this. What is a difference between a nine year old going to youtube and watching that video vs. going on this website and clicking on the link to watch that video? The internet is so open right now it's really hard to maintain that type of censorshipl

Also I think it is stupid to even try, the world has changed, there are no secrets anymore haha

I really like this site.
I think the reason it is not going mouth to mouth, is because some people are embarresd at some point, on being here. It's just a guess.. I know it is a big problem on gSm, and a lot of people don't like to tell their friends about how they spend their time on a website with dress-up dolls, but I don't really know if it's the case on this site. You did set up some social media things, right? Like instagram. Cause I think it will come soon, if it targets to the users. It's about  targeting. My mother is a journalist, and write on websites, and such, and she have teached me so much, how important the tageting is. There are so many ways to get new users, and this site has SO much potential, cause it is the users voice that gets heart the most, and there is so many ways to "Secretly" advertise in these days. But you need to consider your age-group, as other said, and then drive after that. Cause otherwise this site will end up being so confusing and in chaos, that it doesn't attract anyone, cause it seems like there is no red thread to go through with it all.

Yeah I hear this on the Dutch VP also, they are embarrassed they don’t want to tell their friends because this website (also gsm) is childish so how can we change that? How to we make it cool to talk about this website since having a great community obviously isn’t enough.

And I think we should target females 15yo if you should name a specific number. It is the average player on this website. so how can we do that?

People wouldn't be embarrassed if the target audience was for an older age group.
If something looks childish (Which at a first glance this website does) then they are less likely to join it in fear of the stigma it will arouse in their every day life.

Gaiaonline is pretty much targeted to everyone and yet it has a very mature layout and way of going about the dress up aspect on gaia. For instance, it is an anime website and anime is associated with an older crowd (comic con for example). Where as a popstar is something you want to be when you are 9. (I'm not hating on your ideas I'm just trying to explain to you the concept of an older website) and so really, just the name of this website will put some people off.

You need to take a look around at other avatar forum websites and see how they have become so successful.
You have to research into this field to make your own ideas and make them good so people will join.
I don't know if you have done your research or not. But that's what I have always been told in various classes for making different produce.

I don't really know. It seems to be a fact, that most teenagers just gets embarrassed about these kind of sites. I get like that too, and I can't really seem to find a reason. Maybe it's because that on here, you can be who and how you want to be, because you can hide behind a screen, and if your friends in real life found you inhere, they could just ruin that, so much. Maybe if you get some secrets out, cause you know it will never get back to you. I actually think a grat community IS enough, it only needs to get advertised in the right way. Like, get the users (those who wants to), to talk about it on blogs, or on the social media, where they can remain anonymous, if that is what they want to. Also, it's important to take WHAT we talk about inhere, and not how it looks like. You have to promote the special kind of community inhere, instead of promoting the site. Maybe take some interresting topics, and post on the social media sites, and on that notice write the name of the website like... "Wow, this is a exellent question, what do you think of this? Answer in the comments below, or parcitipate in the topic itself on virtuelpopstar!". Also you get to promote the users, and their personalitys, so other people can see what we talk about, and it's not all childish.

Well, if you mostly want to attract females, you have to find out what is "in". Like themes, and things there is up in the time. Actually females and males have a lot similar taste online. I don't really know, but I think it could be a good idea to target female interests, if you think that would be the target-group on this site. When advertising, keep in mind who your group is. Take the "girly" stuff, but don't make it too girly. Most girls in my age like all kind of things guys like too, so it's a fine line, that can be hard to find. For examble is Pokemon a gender neutral thing, in these times, in my country, that is. I don't really know about others, but I can't really find a reason why it would be different.

But to target is important, and it is important to do that ON the site as well as when TALKING about the site. (Advertising).
ON the site, could be a good idea to make some new topics in the forums. It seems a bit crowded in the general topic, and there could be used some other topics, maybe something that would give inspiration to things to talk about, like, eh... Love? I don't really know, but I'm sure others have some great ideas.
Also it would be a good idea to make do as you can select the player in the popstar games (So you can choose to play as a girl, or as a boy, like that one there is there now). It's a minor thing, but a point worth noticing. Also, the childish parts, I don't really see it. I mean, the most of the clothes are AWESOME, and there is something for every taste...
I'm a bit weared down for ideas at the moment, for some reason, but I'm sure I can think of something else, that could make the site more attractive.

But OFF the site... Is there a VP blog? Cause that would be so awesome, and I think that is where, if done proberly, you could get most users to join. It would be a good thing to have one, if you don't already. There could be updates from VP, clothes yet to come, competitions, and ORDINARY stuff, to attract your main group. And not just a FB page, cause there is a HUGE difference. On a blog (if you know how), you could think SEO, so it would come up, when you would search for things on google. In that way, people would find it, read it, find it interesting, check it out, and in best case, become members.

I have to get some other ideas down, but my english sucks, so I just have to find a way to write it proberly. xD
And this post became quite long... Sorry ._.

No I do not feel harassed I like it very much you are putting in your ideas and knowledge, we all together have to make this website great and I can use all the input. So I like your point of making it seems like the website is for older ages, so the younger people will feel more comfortable telling their friends about it. I thought we already had a more mature look than gsm http://nl.gosupermodel.com/frontpage/  but maybe it can be even more mature, any ideas about this, on Gaia they use more white and less colours, kind of boring but maybe more mature. However if older players will come like 20-25yo I do not think they like it here with players of 15-20yo

I really like your point of promoting topics of interested and trigger non-players to join the conversation. Maybe a good idea is to make a signup field right below the post comment button when you are not a member yet :p yeah I like this idea we can make topics about al kinds of stuff and find people that are interested in the topic trough social media maybe Zee has experience with this...

I also was thinking lately, yeah we have a great game but the most value is in the users and the friends you can make here. But what that exactly can mean to you is something you must experience I find it hard to get it clear in advertisement how valuable a community like this can be for the members

About the blog, yes good idea we will do that I can make one for the Dutch then we only need to find a translator that can do it really cheap

Sorry ._.

I really like your point of promoting topics of interested and trigger non-players to join the conversation. Maybe a good idea is to make a signup field right below the post comment button when you are not a member yet <img src='/layout/nl/images/smileys/razz.png' alt=':p'> yeah I like this idea we can make topics about al kinds of stuff and find people that are interested in the topic trough social media maybe Zee has experience with this...

Yea, that's an awesome idea! In that way there are not too many clicks, so people get annoyed. So that's great. And yes, that's the point. It should be easy for someone to sign up, if they find the topics interesting. C:
I have not seen it done, really, yet, so I think it could be a nice way to "secretly" promote the site, and in the same time show people that the things we talk about inhere is both serious and funny. And also just a good waste of time.

I get that. You can't explain to people how it is inhere, BUT you CAN find storys inhere, that you can advertise. I have met a truly wonderfull friend inhere, that I would have never met, if it where not for this site, and for that I am truly thankfull. This (the english server, that is) is truly amazing, cause you can meet and talk to people from other countrys, that might just be the perfect friend for you.

Or you could make a english only, and then use the crappy google translate? It sure would be a little easier (and cheaper). Or you could make different blogs for each country, so those who use more servers also would get different content, and there would be picked inspiration from the different blogs, so it wouldn't be boring too fast. I would love to make such a blog, if it could have a interest. I'm okay at english when I use some time on it. But Dutch I do not know.^^

Yeah off course we can other players let story's for the blogs and translate the one's that to best also to the other languages. I was just saying if I need to write the articles I prefer to do it in Dutch since I need to think a lot sometimes what are the right words in English. I dropped out of school very early and learned 95% of my English from watching series and spending a lot of time behind the computer which you deal with English a lot of ways, websites, programs and so on. But maybe it is better to say HI players, we will create teen blog and you all can contribute. No badges for that, everyone can help if they like.

Oh yea, ofc. :) I see your point.
Yea, maybe. But I think that would be more, than a lot of work for you. Maybe you should choose one or two, to make the english blog, and then they can find people, that would like to share their storys in that sort of way?

@res: No if we do this we need to do it good, we need to find out about what to write and it needs to be all original content so it is better to say like next week we will do an article about XXXX who can help with that? and then we can for each article choose the best member. Buy what software/website we should use that works best with google?

@six: okay indeed, let’s forget that is going to work. Instead use our weakness as our strength and find more people that rather talk anonymously without real life friends on the forums to make new online friends, lets promote the fact you can be anonymously, forget about your real live friends and get online, get on VP and start your second live :p (which btw was a great name for a online community once).
