The numbers tell the amount of mines surrounding them. As shown in the red box, the 8 box surrounding the number is what you should look at, as for this case there is only 3 box surrounding the 3, that tells me that those 3 boxes have mines, so I can flag them. The others are just way to find the mines. In the green section, you see how the box is surrounded by 1's? That tells me that that box contain a mine. In the purple section, you can see that like before in the green section there is a box surrounded by 1's and a 2. That tells you that that box being surrounded contain a mine. And as how there is only 2 box surrounding the number 2 in the purple section, the one that also surround the one box mention before about there being a mine because it is surrounded by 1's in the same section, both of those 2 boxes contain a mine.
