well there was no fashion contests or popstar games or double tours for people with managers, and as for credits, no hall of fame. 
so overall harder, BUT clothing items were also cheaper and trading/selling wasn't really a thing so there was no reason to go mass spending often. 
we did get "daily allowances" though, I think I got 5k a day and I was one of the medium ranks back then. 
That's awesome, getting daily allowances......
