some record labels are inactive and don't do tours/competition so it matters to some extent. but if you don't really care about fans and stuff then you shouldn't really join one at all

not really, they all do the same thing (meaning tours) (or no tours as sunny stated)
there are harry potter and anime labels though, which is a bit more fandom-ish

Record labels are pretty much a group/club thing. To join you can send an invite to the label of your choice and the owner or a mod will either accept or reject your request. 
Some labels have certain themes as mentioned before, Potterheads, etc, and other are just general, Anniversary, etc. 
There are active labels which tour daily and labels that are just there. 
If you are in a label that does tours daily, you could perform an extra 3x in a country and do an extra daily tour. 
Some labels also have music academies. I, myself, find this useless because it only gives around 20 PD each day and it spams you with a message about it daily and it's really annoying. 
Also, people within the label can choose to hosts comps for label members to join only and give exclusive prizes, but that all depends on the label you want to join. But if you are in a label that hosts inside competitions, you can get more PD, credits, items or whatever they choose as prizes. 

If you're looking to choose a label, here's the list of labels in order of fan count. Underneath the fan count you can also see how many tours they did overall.

I suggest you visit the profiles of labels that interest you. Also if they have a video, watch that, and see which you think is most suited toward your tastes. 

if you're purely joining a label just because, that doesn't have tours daily, no mail, etc, there's some out there too I believe or just don't join one at all.
