They've been studying him and even at times befriending him, but just constantly deleting that part of him. 
Perhaps later in the RP they take away that mental block and he realizes he's been seeing lizard-aliens all along!
And lastly, the reason of the accident was all set off because of him, the aliens wanted Monty all along, plus some more rabbits, but Monty was more personal to them).

I do have a reason for his obsession that ties in with why he acts the way he does so it might be strange for him to have been tested on as the root of it. Alternatively, he could have had an encounter in his childhood that made the aliens interested in him because he was biologically capable to succeed as a test subject when he was older or whatever (a capability which would of course also apply for the others who got powers). The memories of the encounter not only got removed from his mind but he himself actively suppresses them (because it makes sense with his character), to the extent that even if the mental block got taken away the memories would begin to take form more like a hunch or a hazy dream in his head.)

Dean was stressed to the point of pulling out bits of his hair. Great, he just found out he received a bunch of money and now he's gonna have to pay it all after the lab sue them all for trespassing! At least he hadn't told his mother about the money, so she wouldn't have to go through the pain of loosing such a ridiculous amount.
