(Oh I've got an idea if we want to go with like, the accident happening because of Monty. He could have been the first test-kid for this particular project, which sparked the idea and that made it more personal? Additionally, the powers could be some inactive gene put there by the liz when they were younger through fake vaccination or something, that was triggered to activate by whatever was in the explosion.)
