You’ve known him since you were young, growing up, his mom was best friends with your mom. Now usually this would mean that the two of you are tighter than ever, except for the fact that you can’t stand him. He’s always been rude to you and isn’t any nicer in school. He’s popular, you’re not a loser, but you would never fit in with their crowd, and his friends tease you. You honestly can’t stand him, and you feel like he feels the same way. He’s just another arrogant jerk, and you vow that you will never be left alone in the same room with him. After the death of his mother, your family forces you to go over for support. To your surprise, he is good to you, and the two of you start talking. It turns out; he always knew his mother was sick, and he was the only one who knew. He promised to keep things a secret, he was just jealous that you had a mother. You tell him that it’s no excuse, and he promises that he will change and so will his friends. The thing is, he does change, but not when he’s around his friends, and that’s a big issue for you. If he’s willing to be your friend outside of school, why not during school. Why is he so ashamed? Will you ever find the courage to stand up to him?

Alyssa rolled her eyes at the group of boys hollering at her. It was the end of school and she was ready to go home. She glanced at the group, their familiar Cheshire cat grins, attentive eyes. These boys were what was considered popular at her little school. She stuck a finger up at them to which they grinned at, signalling back a much cruder finger gesture. She knew them by face, one by name. Nate. Today he was missing, usually in the middle of the group, a sort of ring-leader. Yet today, it was different. The dynamics of the group slightly off. Nate and Alyssa were neighbours, his Mom and hers were best friends, they'd practically grown up together, not that anyone would know that. Nate and Alyssa's relationship was practically non-existent much to their mom's dismay. Alyssa drove home fast, her Mom had text her, something was wrong.

Chuck never meant to buy the small shop. In fact, the shop was just something that fell in front of him. Chuck was born into a rich family, and this shop was something to prove to his parents that he could do just as well as they had. He didn't have to use their money all the time, he could fend for himself.  Yet it seemed like a problem when he bought the shop, he was unaware of how he would basically be sharing the business and how the previous owner, present co-owner, hate him. Chuck was relatively young, maybe too young to own a business and the man who owned the shop wasn't reluctant to remind him. Now as he stood in the doorway of the business, in his suit, having knocked twice, he waited for someone to join him.

Elin sighed as she listened to her dad whine on about what she needed to say to the co owner of the business. Her dad didn't want to deal with Chuck today so he had sent her in his place to talk him and sort things out. Her dad hated that the business was changing but she loved it. As much as she loved the way the business was, it wasn't working and could be so much better and it was getting better since Chuck had helped them. She knew why her dad was so reluctant for change, it was because of her mother. It had been her mothers shop and she had planned everything but she wasn't here anymore. Without her the shop was failing and their only hope was chuck. ''Dad, I've got it ok? you've drilled this into my head since last week. Ok yes I will see you for dinner in an hour or so. Love you too, bye.'' she said and hung up. She chucked her phone into her bag just as she heard the knock on the door. It must be chuck, you had just closed up so it couldn't be anyone else. She opened the door and she had a feeling it was chuck, although she wasn't sure because they were yet to meet. ''Hi, you must be chuck?'' she asked with a smile as she held her hand out for him to shake ''I'm Elin, I'm Alan's daughter. Its nice to finally meet you, my dad's told me all about you and helping us out and stuff. Oh and before I forget, ignore him. You're doing a great job so far so don't let him tell you any different,'' she said as she let him in. She knew that the changes were hurting her dad and she didn't really want to be around the man responsible for it but she was loving that business was improving. She glanced at Chuck and took him in. She didn't expect him to be this attractive. (outfit www.polyvore.com/elin/set?id=200230300)

Nate was sat in his neighbours house staring at the ground in front of him. He felt completely numb. He knew his mum had been sick for years now, he knew from such a young age and had to keep it a secret. The time he had had nightmares about finally arrived. She was gone. She was gone. He didn't know what to do with himself. His mother was the only person he really had in his life, the only person that really cared. His father left when he was seven and they didn't have much family other than that. The only person his mother had been close to was her best friend and neighbour. They had lived next door to her best friend since Nate and the woman's daughter Alyssa were babies. He use to be good friends with Alyssa when they were little, before his mum got sick. But ever since then he hated her, he hated the fact that she had her mother. That her mother was there for her growing up instead of her having to be there for her mother. He knew it was wrong but he couldn't help it. He looked up when he heard a car door shut. Alyssa was home. He didn't want to be here but since he had no one else his mothers best friend was making him stay there, at least until things had been sorted out.

Alyssa unlocked the front door and strolled in, hanging her jacket over a nearby chair. "Hey Mom, I'm ho-" She called walking into the living room. Alyssa was cut short, her eyes immediately scanning the boy sat in the chair opposite her. She noticed him immediately, someone who didn't belong. He didn't look up a her straight away, eyes on the floor, head somewhere else. Alyssa swallowed. This was strange. What was going on? She knew Nate, they had been friends when they were younger but something had happened and he had decided he didn't like her anymore. Alyssa didn't know what and it haunted her every time she saw Nate. How could you go from being friends to not so quickly? And every time she had tried to speak to him about it, Nate had just shut her out until eventually, she just stopped trying. Now, though, Nate was in their house. Alyssa crossed the room and went into the kitchen. "What the fuck is he doing here?" Alyssa asked in a loud whisper to her Mom who was making a pot of tea. Usually, her Mother would have scolded her for using that kind of language but her Mum just looked at Alyssa and Alyssa could tell she had been crying. "Hey, what's wrong?" Alyssa asked her Mum, but her Mum just shook her head and took in the tea to the living room, pouring out three cups. Alyssa felt like a ghost in her own house. Her Mom and this boy next door were sharing a secret and she wasn't a part of it. She couldn't help but feel jealous when she saw her Mum take Nate's hands in her own and kneel in front of him. Her Mom spoke to Nate in hushed whispers and they seemed to be in a world far away from where Alyssa was stood. Sighing, she went back into the kitchen and noticed her sister sat on the kitchen counter, long legs crossed and eyes on Alyssa. Her sister was emotionless and never home so this was another strange occurence. But the strangest thing was what happened next."The lady next door died." Her sister told her matter-of-factly, before hopping off the counter and leaving Alyssa alone with her thoughts.

Chuck laughed nervously, he realised just how overdressed he looked suddenly. He had been wearing a suit. Alan was hard to impress and Chuck was keen on trying to make sure they worked well together. When the door opened and the usual short man with balding hair wasn't there but a younger prettier redhead, Chuck felt himself relax slightly. "I'm Chuck, nice to meet you Elin, hopefully Alan hasn't said anything bad." He laughed again, not believing the last sentence. Alan hated him. He knew it and it looked like Elin knew it too. He followed her to the end of the shop which was a cafe. The business was niche, it was nice, it was a bookstore cafe which everyone, hypothetically, should love, but for some reason, the business barely got any people. He ordered a coffee for himself and sat in the usual spot where he and Alan would usually discuss (and argue) business strategy and talk about the books.

Elin smiled ''Nothing too bad but he doesn't like that things are changing. He's a stubborn man and doesn't like change. But honestly ignore anything he says, he won't like anything in the shop unless it's done by my mother but that wont be happening anymore,'' she said with a sad smile as she followed him inside. She ordered herself her usual hot chocolate with plenty of cream, marshmallows and a flake. Once the drinks were made she told the girl working behind the counter to head home, there was no one else there anyway and it was technically closed so she would handle everything else from there. ''I live upstairs, we could go and talk up there? It gets pretty cold down here at night,'' she said as she took a sip of her drink. When she got fed up of living at home she asked her dad if she could do up the upstairs of the building and she managed to turn it into a nice little apartment for herself. ''So what do you and my dad usually talk about? I don't really know what he wants to me to do today. Well I do. He wants me to argue with you about everything because he doesn't like any of it. But I on the other hand love the ideas and the changes that are being made so let's not argue and actually work on ideas. I love this place, I've grown up in it but it frustrates me that it could do better and my dad doesn't try. You're honestly the only hope for this place,''

Nate took a shaky breath as Alyssa's mother took his hands. Looking at her reminded him of his mum so much, how they would always be laughing together and having fun. But his mum wasn't there to have fun with her anymore. He closed his eyes tightly not wanting to cry but he could feel it coming. He had been holding his fear and sadness back since the day he found out his mother was sick, he had to be strong for her so he pretended that everything was ok and that they would get through it. But nothing was ok. Alyssa's mother was saying how she had to go out quickly but she would be back soon and  that he could stay at her house so he wasn't alone. She went to start getting ready to go out and he sighed, he was just alone with Alyssa now. He put his head in his hands and took a deep breath, not knowing what to do with himself. He reached forward and took the tea that had been given to him and took a small sip. He looked up again and noticed Alyssa in the kitchen. ''Hey,'' he said quietly, wondering if she knew.

Alyssa had no time to react to her sister's declaration. And as fast as she had said it, she was gone. It wasn't surprising behaviour from Kiera to do something like that but her older sister was never one for emotion anyway, that was all Alyssa. Alyssa turned to Nate who was standing in the doorway, the cup of tea in his hand. "Hey,"She replied softly, it had been a while since they had been alone like this. "I'm sorry," Alyssa started, suddenly aware of the distance between them. "Your mom was like an aunt to me." Alyssa told him, thinking about her, "I remember one time, I'd sneaked out and came home real late, Mom would have been furious, she'd have locked me up and thrown away the key but your mum saw me in the night and invited me in, we sat in the kitchen in the early hours over cups of hot chocolate," Alyssa knew she was rambling and she didn't know if he even knew about this story but she told it anyway,"I ended up falling asleep in her lap and she told my Mom I'd slept over..." Alyssa trailed off, she brushed a stray piece of hair behind her ear before looking up at the boy in front of her. "I'm really sorry." She told him, it hadn't quite hit her yet, the brutal realness of it. His mum was gone, Alyssa wiped away a tear in her eyes, embarrassed, she turned away from him, busying herself by cleaning up the mess her sister had left behind.

Chuck felt reassured by the girl in front of him, she was a lot nicer than her dad was and a lot chattier. This was going to be easier than he thought. And to think, he had been nervously prepping himself for this earlier, dreading meeting Alan. He couldn't help but compare his simple latte and her hot chocolate which was overly decorated. Chuck smiled at the girl politely. He knew how cold it got, he was wearing a thick jumper even though it was early Autumn. "Upstairs is a good idea, I was actually thinking we should get some heaters down here. I'd pay of course." Chuck chipped in, taking  a sip from his coffee. The coffee wasn't exactly good here but he didn't know how to say so, so instead he just drank the coffee in hope of feeling warmer. "We usually talk about how much money he- i mean, we made this week? He has a little book with numbers..."Chuck trailed off, scratching the back of his head nervously as he followed her up some stairs he hadn't realised existed, hidden at the back. "We talk about ideas, book of the week, how to get more people in here, that kind of thing." Chuck paused, "I'm real sorry to hear about your Mum, Alan really seemed to have loved her." Chuck said sincerely.

Elin nodded "I agree, heaters would be great. I don't know why we haven't got any to be honest. I swear everything here really needs improving on its very dated. The coffee isn't even good, how can you have a coffee shop with bad coffee? At least things are better than they were before I suppose, business has improved since you came along." She said as she led him upstairs to her little apartment. She unlocked the door and stepped inside, smiling at how cosy it was. She really did love it, it was cosy and just cute. She took a sip of hot chocolate before she sat down on the arm chair. "Oh yes, he dropped that off earlier actually it's around here somewhere," she said and walked over to the kitchen counter and grabbed her fathers little black book of mystery. She never actually got to see what was inside of it. She handed it to Chuck before she sat down again. "Sounds like the perfect thing for me to do then," she said with a little laugh "I've been giving him ideas for years and years about ways to improve but he always thinks about how mum would have done things and doesn't want to change it. I don't know why he doesn't let me help out to be honest, I am studying business for gods sake," she said as she pushed some hair behind her ear. She nodded "Thank you," she said softly "He really did love her. They were childhood sweethearts and had been together for years and years. It's strange not having her around now to tell him what to do. I can always remember her having him run around doing this and doing that and she would come up with all sorts of crazy ideas to get people in. Now she's gone it's like everyone went with her so the cafe is failing," she said as she bit her lip gently. "Anyway, let's get chatting ideas and things. I have quite a few," she said with a laugh.

Nate bit his lip as he listened to her speak and tears welled in his eyes. He remembered that weekend. It was around the time that he had stopped talking to Alyssa. The time when his mother got really ill. He bit his lip and took a seat at the kitchen table "I remember that," he said softly "I remember wanting to come and join you both but then I remembered I had stopped talking to you. It was that week that she.. She found out she was ill," he said quietly "She found out she had cancer that week. She had been feeling unwell for a while and when they caught it it had spread to another part of her body already. She's been ill all these years but she never wanted any of you to know. She didn't want to show that something like that had gotten her down." He said as a tear slid down his cheek "I remember when she got ill just being angry at everyone. Angry and upset that everyone had their mum but I had to take care of mine because she was slowly dying," he said as he shook his head. "I knew this day was coming and no matter how much I prepared myself for it.." He sighed, not knowing what else to do or say. All he could think about was that the only person who really cares about him was gone. "She loved you, Alyssa. She wanted you to know that. She said you were like the little girl she never had," he said as he looked to meet her eyes.

Alyssa closed her eyes for a while, taking in everything he was saying. She laughed a little at the last line and turned around, sniffling. She was only slightly teary wheresas Nate had tears running down his face, he hadn't bothered to wipe them way. It was only then when Alyssa saw how tired he looked. "You should have joined us." She said softly, making her way towards him, he was a good few inches taller than her so as he looked down, she met his eyes. She was always the one who forgave easier, couldn't keep a grudge to save her life and sure, she was angry at this boy who had just thrown away their friendship like that, but at least now she had a reason for his actions. "That's why you stopped talking to me, because you found out." Alyssa thought outloud. At least it wasn't something she had done. She'd spent so many nights awake thinking about what she had done to make Nate hate her so much. "I'm so sorry." Alyssa repeated, she wiped away some of Nate's tears, his face was warm under her cool fingers. He was so fragile, so vulnerable, under her hands, she felt as if she let him go, he'd just fall. She couldn't do that, she had to be strong for the both of them. "I'm angry at you, but for now, I'm here for you." Alyssa told him softly, she took his hand in his. Alyssa was always an emotional and touchy person, she couldn't help it. Words failed her, but hugs and hand holding was something real. The limpness of his touch scared her but she couldn't let him know that, she just squeezed his hand and led him back into the living room to sit down.

Chuck caught the black book Erin handed him, he could skim through it later, for now, he just wanted to talk to her. "the coffee is pretty shit." Chuck admitted, running a hand through his hair. "You're studying business?" Chuck asked her, now this was interesting. He had just graduated from Yale having done business. "Where are you studying?" He asked her, running his fingers over the black book, turning it over again and again in his hands. The room was getting warmer and he was starting to regret wearing his thick jumper. Chuck watched her as she spoke about her Mum and how she bit her lip. She was a bright sunny woman but there was a cloudiness to her when she spoke about her Mum. it made him think of his own parents and how he rarely saw them. He would ring them when he got home to his apartment. "good idea!" Chuck laughed, clapping his hands. "Let's get down to business, what are you thinking?" He asked her, looking her directly in the eye.

Elin nodded "It is. Mum loved it for some reason so dad won't change it," she said as she shook her head "That's why I stick to hot chocolate. Well mind you it's probably because I'm a chocolate addict too. Give me chocolate and I'd probably love you forever," she laughed as she nibbled on the flake that was sticking out of her hot chocolate. She had to have one every time she was at the cafe. It wasn't a good thing but luckily she managed to still look great, even with all the hot chocolate. She nodded "yeah, I've just started my first year at Yale actually. Studied a bit at the community college round here first, just want to get a better degree. I'm guessing you must have studied some kind of business too?" She asked "I'm surprised to be honest I didn't expect you to be so young. I thought it would be someone much older who got half the business," she said as she looked over at him. They must be the same age or he must be just a little bit older than her. When he said lets get down to business and looked her in the eyes she couldn't help but admire how beautiful his eyes were, they were such a pretty colour. They were a deep brown colour with flecks of different shades of brown. They were beautiful. She blinked a bit to snap herself out of thinking about his eyes "I was thinking we could start up some writing groups and book clubs. A lot of people like the idea of book clubs and writing workshops but there aren't that many places to do so in the city so we could offer that. We could have them run on different days and have guests every so often if we can get them. To spread the word more about the shop and te groups we could advertise in the different local papers, online and get leaflets sent out to people's homes as well as dotted round other people's businesses and such. Another thing we could do is partner up with the bakery across the street to provide better quality food, cakes and so on so we don't have to spend as much getting things delivered. I've looked into this and actually works out cheaper and they would be happy to work with us. It shows that we like to keep things local too and makes us look interested in joining with the rest of the community. What else.. Oh yeah maybe we could start selling some books from authors that aren't that big yet? I've seen how writers from places like wattpad are having their work published so maybe we could consider selling books like that instead of just big and well known names. Sorry for so many ideas at once I've just not had the chance to share my ideas since my dad always shoots me down,"

Nate nodded when she said he should have joined them "I should have," he said quietly and looke down at his feet, feeling full of sadness and regret. He nodded again in agreement "That is why I stopped talking to you I just I couldn't tell anyone and I was angry and upset and I took out on you when I shouldn't have. I just saw you being so happy with your own mum that it made me feel sad and angry thinking why does it have to happen to my mum," he said as he ran a hand through his hair "Pushing you away was probably also because I couldn't tell you either I knew if we were still friends I would have told you and my mum would have been so mad and upset if that happened," he said as he looked at her. He took a deep breath as she wiped his tears away but they just kept coming. This was the first time he had cried over this mess "Don't be," he said, sounding broken. "I don't blame you for being angry at me. What I did was shit and I truly am sorry. I want to make things right again.. If you would let me. I understand if you don't want to be friends or whatever but," he sighed, wiping his eyes. He stared down at her hand when she took his and looked up at her just before they went into the living room. He gave her a tiny squeeze back before taking a seat. " I don't know what to do with myself. What do I do with the house? What do I do with her stuff I don't know what to do and I don't even have family to help me deal with this its all me, it's always been all me," he said as he shook his head, running a hand through his already messy hair.

Alyssa sighed and looked up at Nate biting her lip. He shouldnt have had to keep all this to himself, especially at such a young age and for so long. It did explain a lot of things though, like how Nate's Dad had walked out on them around the time his Mum was probably diagnosed. How she stopped seeing Nate at parties and gatherings, why he had stopped talking to him. Alyssa took a deep breath in, this was such a huge mess and she had no idea what to say or how to say it. "Don't worry,"She started, sitting next to him on the sofa, their legs touching, "My mom will take care of it all, just, take as long as you need, I'm sure you can stay with us for as long as you need. The guest bedroom is just begging to be slept in." Alyssa smiled at the broken boy in front of her. Tentatively, she put a hand to his shoulder and let him sob. At this point, her Mom had returned, looking tired. "Mom, "Alyssa started and walked to the door, hugging the smaller woman. Alyssa had been taller than most girls her age and a lot taller than her small Chinese mother. Her mum had always been so strong and ruthless in everything she did so Alyssa seeing her mum broken for the first time was scary. As soon as she put her arms around her Mum, he felt her crumble under her grip. "Go up to bed," Alyssa murmured in her Mother's ear, "We can take care of this tomorrow." She promised her Mum and watched as her Mum started to walk up the stairs, her Mum turned around and looked at the figure still sat on the sofa, "Nathaniel, honey, you're staying here, no arguments, Lissie will look after you." Lissie was a nickname only her Mum called her so hearing it made Alyssa turn a subtle pink.

Chuck scrunched up his nose, "Maybe it's a refined taste." He smiled at the redhead."Our palates just arent sophisticated enough." Chuck was sipping the bad coffee and perked up at the sound of Yale, "I loved Yale!" He said excitedly, unknowingly showing his youth, he tried hard to perfect this cool refined character but at time,s his age seeped through the mask. "I went to Yale too," he corrected himself, calm again, "graduated last year and now, here I am," He said, arms beckoning around them. "I'm only 24, " he admitted,"But my parents, they wanted me to prove myself, and I don't want to just live off their money, "Chuck shrugged, looking around the apartment, there were some stray books here and there that looked interesting. "Writing groups..."Chuck considered, "that's a pretty good idea, I'd never even thought about that." He realised, this was a girl he could learn from himself, "And I was thinking, live music every now and then? and getting authors in to showcase their books?" Chuck continued, he opened up the black book Erin had handed him, the profits were low, they were doing slightly well than just breaking even, it wasn't enough. He hadn't only invested in the business but in the people here. "I think, you're gonna help make this place so much better." Chuck winked at her, this was just the start of something big.

Elin laughed ''Probably. I have some better coffee up here, if you wanted a cup of that instead,'' she said with a smile. She couldn't help but grin at his outburst about loving Yale. It was nice to see that he wasn't just all serious. ''You went to Yale? What a small world. I know who to turn to if I need some help then,'' she said with a smile. She nodded when he said he was only 24 ''I thought you must have been around my age, I'm just surprised you chose a place like this though,'' she said as she looked over at him. She was younger than him by a few years though, she was only twenty one. ''I'm glad you like,'' she said with a smile ''I know I've attended things like it myself so even if no one else turns up, I will,'' she said with a smile. She enjoyed writing, she always had and she supposed it came from growing up in a book store and reading all the books she could get her hands on. ''Music could be good, I could imagine that that would appeal to the younger crowd as well as the older so it could be a good move. And authors showcasing their work would be great. It appeals to so many more people that doing these different things could make the customer load even bigger. I think we could be on to something good here,'' she said excitedly. She couldn't help but grin when he winked at her and said that she was going to help make the place much better ''Hope you're right. I want to see this place do well, it's been doing just ok for too long it's time to make it great and better than it ever has been. So when do we get these ideas rolling?'' she asked as she got up and grabbed a notebook from her desk, wanting to write down their ideas and any thoughts on how to improve things down so they didn't forget and had something to look back on when planning. ''I think I should tell my dad I'll help you with this stuff from now on because plans are actually being made,'' she laughed. She wouldn't complain at having to see him again, he seemed like a really nice guy. And he was cute too.

Nate nodded ''Your mum said I can't leave until everything's sorted out. I don't know what I would do if it wasn't for you and your mum,'' he said with a sigh. Without them he would be completely alone. When she put a hand on his shoulder he broke and wrapped his arms around her in a tight hug, the tears falling down his cheeks. He couldn't remember the last time he cried like this, it had been drilled into his head from a young age that crying made you weak but now he was realising that it didn't make you weak at all. He only let go when she went to see her mother. He watched the and it made him feel even worse. He turned his eyes away just as he heard her mother speak. He nodded ''Yes Ma'am. Thank you,'' he said with a tiny smile as he wiped his eyes. He yawned, tiredness and exhaustion hitting him. It had been a long and weird day. He looked at Alyssa when her mum was gone and gave her a small smile ''Thanks for looking after me, Lissie,'' he said with a little laugh.

Alyssa felt the warmth of Nate's body against hers, his vulnerability seeping into her, his tears staining her white shirt. She hugged him back, supporting him and broke off as soon as she saw her Mum. Alyssa watched the interaction between Nate and her Mum and smiled a little at his 'Ma'am.' So polite, she thought, she hadn't really seen this side of him. "No problem Nathaniel," Alyssa teased back, mocking him slightly. She saw how tired Nate looked and offered to show him to his room, she pulled out her phone and text her Dad to let him know what was going on. Her Dad worked a lot and was rarely home but she thought this was too important to leave:
Hey Dad,
please call me as soon as you get this, it's important, it's about mom
love always,
Lissie
She didn't know what timezone differences were in China but she figured it was worth a try. And if he didn't reply soon, she would call him. Alyssa realised how rude she was being, engrossed in her phone whilst Nate was literally trying his best to keep himself together, I mean his Mum has died this morning, Alyssa couldn't begin to understand what that might feel like. "Sorry." She said, sheepishly and opened the door to the guest bedroom. "I'm right down the hall, so just knock if you need anything. Kiera's sleeping right next door to you, she's a heavy sleeper so you should be okay. I mean, she does snore but, yeah." Alyssa said, awkwardly, standing in the doorway, waiting for his reaction.

Chuck smiled at her invitation for some better coffee but politely refused. "Maybe next time." He promised her, and there would be a next time. Erin was a lot easier to talk to than Alan and he liked how excited she was about it all. Alan had just seemed tired and bored by it all. So reluctant to shift. "Well, Yale is incredible, I miss it." Chuck confessed and he did, he missed all his friends and the parties and even the studying, now he was out in the real world and he felt less than ready for it. He was too young, he should have stayed in school, done a Masters, done anything else. Chuck watched her get her notebook, she had a bright way of moving, almost as if she was dancing to an invisible song, it was fanciful and intriguing. "As soon as possible, I'll start looking into bands and authors." Chuck said, noting it into his smartphone. "Do you know anyone you'd like to get involved?" He asked her in his clipped business voice. Erin was a [pretty girl and he liked how she was but he didn't know if he could get to know her in a more personal sense, even though he wanted to, he had to keep it to business. He had to.

Elin nodded ''Sounds good,'' she said with a smile when he said maybe next time. ''Its good to here that you enjoyed it then, gives me high hopes for my time there. I was a little nervous because I wasn't sure what it was going to be like but I feel a little better now. I'm just still surprised I got in,'' she said with a laugh. She opened her notebook and began to quickly write down all the ideas they had come up with, her quick hand writing still managing to somehow look neat. ''Fab. I'll start putting together ideas for the writing workshops, I could host the first one if you like? I've been writing for years, I'm by no means a professional but I think I'm pretty good at it. I could find a professional if you wanted me to though,'' she said, glancing up from her notebook. ''I have a few authors I know of that I could send a message to see if they were interested. And I know some bands who would love the chance to get heard, I know my friends in a bad and they know bands so it could be a good way to get people. I'll send a message to my friend later and get recommendations and stuff like that. In fact they have a gig tomorrow night, if you wanted to go and check them out. Or I could get a video while I'm there and show you next time or something,'' she said with a shrug, blushing a bit when she realised she has basically invited him to come and see her friends band with her.

Nate followed Alyssa to the spare bedroom. He was more than ready to sleep, to forget about the awful things that had happened today. Although he had a feeling that sleep wouldn't be coming easy to him. His mind was full of thoughts of his mother, memories, regrets. He didn't think it would be an easy task to get his mind to shut up. When they reached his room he shook his head when she apologised ''Don't be,'' he said quietly and stepped into the room. ''Thank you. Thank you for being so nice to me, Lyss. I don't deserve your kindness but you're being so nice and you have no idea how much it means to me,'' he said as he pulled her in for a hug and held her tight in his arms. ''Thank you,'' he whispered before letting her go and taking a seat on the edge of the bed, not sure what to do with himself.

Alyssa returned the hug again but couldnt help but feel strange about the whole situation. I mean, they hadn't talked in roughly 5 years and now he was hugging her and talking to her? I mean, she didn't blame him,the situation was messy and his reaction was more than expected, but Alyssa just didn't know how to react exactly to his sudden warmth and gratitude. "No problem." Alyssa smiled at him, noticing how he's hung on to her Mom's nickname for her. "Sleep tight." She said and left him with his thoughts. He probably needed some time alone, Alyssa decided. She made her way back down, it wasn't exactly late but the sun had gone down. Alyssa strolled to the kitchen, filled a glass of water and opened the back door, sitting on one of the concrete steps. She pulled out her phone and frowned at the lack of her Dad's reply. I mean, she was used to this sort of behaviour from him, how he could just ignore them like that but she really felt like, maybe this time, he would actually reply. Alyssa decided to ring his cell instead. one second, two seconds, three seconds she counted in her head, biting her lip. When he didn't pick up after 8 seconds, Alyssa rang the office instead. Her father's secretary picked up. "Hello Alyssa," the curt voice said, "Your father is very busy at the moment and cannot speak to you. If you have a message I can pass it on, but for future reference please do not call on his trips away." Alyssa didn't even get a word in but rolled her eyes and said "Fine." before hanging up and sighing.

Chuck looked at her, "they probably liked your passion." He thought outloud, smiling at her. Chuck was taken aback by just how she prepared she was, it seemed like she was more on top of it than he was. "You're amazing,"He laughed, "This was easier than I thought." He rubbed his temples, slightly tired. "I'd love to read some of your work, if that would be okay? I'm a horrible writer but I love reading, one of the reasons I got into this business specifically." He told Erin. "And sure, I don't think I have any plans tomorrow, and if I do, I can always rearrange." He said, running a hand through his hair, mentally checking. "If that's everything, I think we're pretty much done here then." He told her, they hadn't spent as long as he and Alan did bickering about things, it was pretty refreshing to meet a girl like her.

Elin nodded "Must be something like that that got me in and got me the scholarship," she said with a little shrug. Luckily she had a full ride scholarship to the school because there was no way she would be able to attend if she didn't. The only money they had coming in was from her small job and the cafe so it wasn't much. She was just happy to be going to her dream school, she had dreamed about going to Yale since she went on a school trip to take a look when she was eleven. She loved it. When he called her amazing she couldn't help but feel her cheeks blush "Thanks," she said with a little laugh "I'm guessing my dad makes things difficult for you? In fact don't answer that, I know he does. But hopefully things will be easier from now on if he can see that I can actually help out. Who knows, he's stubborn and will only do things his way or no way," he said with a shake of her head. She grinned a little when he asked if he could read her work "Sure. I'm not the best but it's decent I guess. I apologise in advance if you think it's completely awful," she said with a little laugh and walked over to her book shelf and pulled out a simple looking book. "My dad had my first and favourite book that I've written made up into one actual book for me so you can borrow it if you want to," she said as she held it out to him. "Cool," she said, flashing him a smile. She grabbed her notebook and ripped out a piece of paper. She folded it in half and wrote down the address and time of the gig "The band goes on at eight so just show up whenever you want to, I'll be there way befor helping the band set up and stuff," she said with a little shrug. "Really? This went a lot better than my dad said it would," she said with a laugh. "It was great to finally meet you, Chuck," she said honestly "I love your name by the way. Reminds me of chuck from gossip girl," she said with a laugh.

Nate laid back on the bed once he was alone and sighed softly, not knowing what to do with himself. He was tired yet wide awake at the same time. He laid on his side, thinking about how strange today had been. It hadn't expected to see Alyssa and to say the things he had said but he somehow felt better for it. He wanted to have some familiar things back in his life now that his mum was gone and she was familiar and reminded him of the happier memories with his mum. As the hours passed her slowly drifted off to a dreamless sleep, all thoughts of his mother and the awful day leaving his mind for at least a few hours.
