Carmen crossed her arms over her chest as she blew a strand of blonde hair away from her face as she looked out of the car window. She knew that she was doing this for her families benefit but it didn't mean that she was happy about it whatsoever. She had two other sisters but because she was the oldest she had to take the hit this time. "Smile darling, it brightens up your face so much," her father said to her, tapping her under the chin as she looked over at him. "You're not the one having to marry a complete stranger," she muttered under her breath as the car stopped outside a house. She was betrothed to a man named Charles, he was the son of a wealthy man who her family had business with. The details were something she didn't know of but all she knew was that they were to be married within the month. The house was impressive, she had to admit as she stepped out of the car, her heel crunching on the stones beneath. She straightened her dress a little, feeling more than a little uncomfortable. It was almost like she was cattle her father was trying to sell off to the highest bidder. "No back chat and no lip young lady, you've to make a good first impression," her mother said to her as she resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Instead she looked up at the large house and it made her wonder how many bathrooms were inside.

Alexander hated wearing these stupid penguin suits but he'd been told to dress in his best to meet his future wife. He had too much love for his family to disobey their orders and he figured he could possibly fall in love with the prospective girl. He was an optimist like that. He checked the time on his watch, "Shit," he said, grabbing his wallet and jacket as he ran out of his apartment. He was late as per usual and he was sure he would n't be met with happy gazes when he got to his parents house. Thankfully there wasn't much traffic and he got their quickly, taking the back entrance into the house. He met his parents in the living room just as he was straightening up his tie. "For god sake Alex," his mother tutted as she came over to past down his shirt a little and he shooed her away. "I look fine, leave me be," he said with a frown. His father simply nodded at him and he didn't expect much more from him. "I told you I'd make it on time didn't I?" he said to his mother who was busily fixing his tie now. He held in the urge to sigh and just let her do whatever. It would be too much hassle to put a fight.

"Hurry along, Charles. She's going to be here any moment." Charles shook his head, trying to block out his mother's nagging. He didn't want to be apart of this sham of a marriage. Charles wanted to marry someone that he actually loved, not some woman that was being sold off by her family. Even though Charles was grateful that he came from a fortunate family, it was small things like this that made him yearn for a 'normal' life. Charles eventually listened to his mother and moved a little faster. He sprayed a little cologne on before leaving his room. He strolled to the main hallway, right before the stairs before his mother stopped him. She was dressed in a long, fitted orange gown. She had on gold accessories to match her gold heels. She wore her hair pinned up in a sleek bun. His mother's radiant brown skin and light eyes caused her to not look a day over 35. "Wait here. When they arrive down in the foyer, we'll then walk down the stairs. So we'll have a grand entrance." Charles just clenched his jaw. He didn't want to say anything that was going to hurt his mother's feelings but he couldn't help but feel like his opinion didn't matter. He hated that the only thing that truly mattered to his family was money. After a few moments, his father joined them at the top of the stairs. He rolled his eyes in annoyance. Charles was especially upset because he told his dad years ago that he did not want an arranged marriage, and his dad said that he wouldn't have to have one. "Always lying" Charles thought to himself as he shook his head. The three of them waited until they heard the butler announce that they were here. "Great" Charles said sarcastically before fixating his eyes on the door, to see his 'bride to be.'

Ayah looked herself over in the mirror for the thousandth time. She was dressed in the same  blush colored gown that her mother had worn the day she'd met Ayah's father. Even though arranged marriages were common in Ayah's family, she was not okay with it. The thought of an arranged marriage just terrified Ayah. She knew what had happened to plenty of her cousins with their husbands, and she did not want to fall victim to that as well. "Honey, we have to get going." Her fathers voice made her jump out of her thoughts. "Yes father." She said lowly. She grabbed her clutch and headed for the car. Ayah felt trapped, all she wanted to do was runaway. She didn't think it was fair for this to happen to her. She wanted to truly live her life on her own terms. After what seemed like forever, they arrived at a grand mansion. Ayah couldn't believe her eyes. She'd never seen a house this much bigger than hers. "Maybe I can get used to it." She sarcastically thought to herself. She watched her family leave the car but she couldn't seem to move. She felt stuck, she heard her father scoff at her. "Ayah, get your ass out. He's waiting on you. You don't want their first impression of you to be that you're a diva, would you." She heard him rant. Ayah rolled her eyes and sighed. She slowly left the car and decided to just ignore her father's words.

Carmen was stood behind her parents as they knocked on the large door and a butler answered the door. Was she even surprised that they had a butler? Not really. She walked into the large house and into the foyer as she looked around the room. To say it was breath taking would be the under statement of the century. She was pretty sure that a single picture hanging on the wall was worth more money than she could ever dream of in her whole entire life. Standing in this room she felt incredibly inadequate in the red dress she'd bought her her own wages and her knock off designer shoes. That only increased when she looked to the stairs to see a tall, elegant woman descending the staircase with a man by her side. It was at that moment Carmen started to feel nerves replacing the anger inside of her. Her parents had told her of the wealth they owned but she didn't think it would be on this level. Her eyes then fell on the man that stood behind the other two and their eyes met as he was looking directly at her too. Well he was certainly attractive that was for sure. She moved her eyes away abruptly, looking at her parents backs as she tried to compose herself but couldn't stop her hands from shaking. Get it together girl,  she told herself sternly. As they reached the bottom of the stairs, her father stepped forward and held out a hand to the other man whilst her mother was kissing cheeks with the woman. "And this is our daughter Carmen," he father said, tugging on her arm to pull her forward a little. She smiled at them, "You have a lovely home," she said, since she wasn't sure what else to say.

Alexander blew out a sigh as his mother kept picking at things on his suit and he just allowed her because it was easier than putting up a fight. He wondered what this girl would look like and what type of personality she would have. Maybe they would be compatible? He highly doubted it but there was always a possibility of it happening. "Okay they're here," his father said, pulling his wife away from Alexander who was eternally grateful. They stood just at the bottom of the stairs with Alex a few steps above, his eyes on the door so he could see when she walked through. She walked in last behind her parents and it took all he had not to smile. She was beautiful. The dress she was wearing complimented her skin tone and seemed to make her eyes twinkle. Or was that just the light, either way his eyes were giving her a good sweep so he could take in all of her features. His father had grasped the mans hand in a firm handshake and they were discussing a few things before they broke apart and he figured this would be the introductions. But before his father could introduce him, Alexander took a step forward, "I'm Alex, it's nice to meet you sir," he said to the guy, holding his hand out for him to shake. He smiled at his wife and then moved his eyes to the girl, his smile softening a little, "Hi," he said to her with a nod.

Charles eyes lit up when he saw his bride to be. She looked better than he could've ever imagined her to. Her rosy, red dress complimented her bright blue eyes. She's beautiful. He thought to himself. He couldn't believe his soon-to-be wife looked like she belonged in the playboy mansion. Charles couldn't help but feel like he got lucky. He just prayed that they would be able to get along. He knew that good looks did not guarantee a good wife. "Thank you Carmen. We're glad you like it. That will make the transition so much easier." Charles' mother, Anya, proudly said. Charles couldn't believe his mother. It hadn't been two seconds since Carmen had gotten there and she was already talking about her moving in. Charles knew he had to marry her but he didn't see why his mother had to rush everything. Charles greeted her mother and father, "Hello Mr. and Mrs. Clyde." He then turned his attention back to Carmen and grabbed her hand. He placed a kiss on the top of her hand before introducing himself. He smiled wide, flashing his deep dimples. Charles was trying to act as natural as he possibly could, even though this was extremely awkward for him. "I'm Charles. It's nice to finally meet you." Although he was nervous, he kept his eyes glued to hers.

Ayah faked a smile. She looked at both of their parents and felt the urge to vomit. She couldn't believe that she was actually here, getting auctioned off like piece of meat, and sold to the highest bidder. Ayah could hardly contain her disgust but she tried her hardest to do so. She didn't want to make Alex feel uncomfortable. After all, it wasn't like this arranged marriage was his idea. It could be much worse, Ayah. She thought to herself. Besides, he lived in a huge home and he was attractive. Alexander's dark hair and light eyes were enough to make her consider giving this a chance. "Hello." Ayah timidly said. She looked down to the floor, trying to avoid eye contact with everyone. It was obvious that everyones eyes were on the two of them. She couldn't handle being the center of unwanted attention. Ayah's parents greeted Alexander's family as if they were old friends and Ayah couldn't believe it. "Maybe we should give them some time to get acquainted?" Ayah's mother suggested before grabbing onto her husbands arm. Ayah and Alexander's parents then joined together and began to walk in the direction of the west wing of his home. Ayah watched them walk away before finally making eye contact with Alex. She wished that he wasn't as attractive as he was because it would make it easier for her to be against this marriage. She smiled a little bit then looked at the ground for a second. "So, how's the weather?" She said trying to break the ice.

Carmen had a lump in her throat when Anya spoke of her moving into their home, away from her family. She knew it would happen but she was hoping she wouldn't have to think about it so soon into their first meeting. Although her attention was then redirected as Charles took her hand and kissed the top of it. He could probably feel it trembling within his own but she managed to smile at him, his own smile was so dazzling she couldn't help herself. "It's nice to meet you too," she said to him with a nod, looking into his eyes. She knew they were being stared at and her father was the first to speak up, "So we have some business to discuss .. " trailing off as he found Charles' father and they walked off, the two women following behind which left Carmen alone with Charles. She pulled her hand away, finally pulling her eyes away from his own as she let her eyes wander around the foyer they were standing in. She then opened her mouth to speak but then closed it again because she wasn't entirely sure of what to say. Nor was she sure she was brave enough to say anything. But she finally mustered the courage to speak, "I'm a bit nervous," she said with an awkward laugh and a small smile. "I'm not too sure how these things are meant to go .. are we just supposed to pretend this is a date or something?" she asked him, biting on her bottom lip. She was completely out of her depth here and she felt insecure standing in such a grand room, knowing her background.

Alexander met Ayah's eyes for a moment before she redirected them to the floor again. He had to admit it was pretty awkward with everyone around them, watching their every move. Thankfully her mother spoke up and they all started filing from the room and it left Alexander standing there with Ayah. He was about to say something to break the silence but she beat him to it and he couldn't help but to let out a laugh at her question. "I mean I'm pretty sure it's the same as down there?" he said referring to her height. He was quite a bit taller than her. "Cloudy with a chance of marriage," he joked before shaking his head at himself. "I'm sorry that wasn't funny," he apologised for his own shitty joke. He paused for a minute before continuing, "Do you want something to drink? Maybe to ease both our nerves?" he suggested to her with a raised eyebrow. He knew he would need some strong scotch to get through the rest of the night with both sets of parents. Her parents seemed just as controlling as his were. Although he was still trying to keep upbeat and optimistic about the situation, he could feel the nerves start to rise up within him if he thought about the situation for too long. "Come this way," he encouraged her, leading her towards the living room. It had a bar within it and he could get her whatever she wanted to drink, alcoholic or non.

Ayah slightly rolled her eyes and faked a laugh. Wow, classic short joke, eh? She thought it couldn't get any worse than that but it did. She didn't appreciate his joke but she felt it was so awkward that she had to laugh at it to avoid making things worse than it already was. "He he." She sarcastically mumbled. She followed his lead to the living room. She took in her surroundings and she couldn't believe her eyes. The living room screamed wealth. She didn't think that people actually kept statutes in their house. The more she looked around, the more she felt insecure. Ayah didn't come from a poor family but she also didn't come from a background as well off as Alexander. Ayah sat at the bar and looked at all the drinks that they had on display. She felt a little overwhelmed but decided a simple rum and coke would do. Hopefully this isn't too casual, she thought to herself. She hoped that he wasn't judging her too harshly on her drink choice.

Charles let out a small chuckle, "I'm not sure either. I think we should just do things our own way. Let's just go with the flow." He said trying to reassure her that he didn't plan on putting much pressure on her. He noticed that she was trembling when he held her hand. He too, was nervous but decided that it would be best if he didn't tell her that. He didn't want her to think that he was trying to downplay her feelings. After all, she was the one being uprooted from her family. "Would you like to get a drink and go for a walk? We don't have to be here..." He trailed off whilst still keeping eye contact with her. "That way we won't have to worry about anyone coming to bother us and we can actually be ourselves."  He offered, in hopes that she'd agree. It was a little too awkward just to stand around in the foyer.

Awkward silences were something Alexander didn't handle very well and he felt the need to fill the space with his voice . He'd always had a big mouth, saying things he shouldn't. It got him into trouble a lot because he didn't know when to stop. But he could tell he'd put his foot right in it from the reaction he got from Ayah. Why couldn't he have just kept his fucking mouth shut? He walked round to the back of the bar as she picked out what she wanted to drink, rum and cola. It was simple but he liked that. Sometimes the simple things in life were the best, something his family didn't quite understand. He got a glass out for himself, putting a few ice cubes in the glass before pouring some scotch in the glass. He didn't usually take a mixer, finding it went down better without anything else. Lifting the glass, he took a sip before walk around to the other side of the bar where she was sitting. He'd noticed as they walked in, her eyes moving around the living room and her eyes landing on each individual thing. "It's a bit excessive huh?" he said to her, lifting the glass up to take another sip from it. At this rate he'd be onto his second glass in no time, he had to slow down. "The drawing room is worse, pictures of ancestors I never knew all staring back at me," he said, resisting the urge to shudder at the thought. He hated that room. In fact, he hated just being back here. He wanted to go back to his own apartment where he could just be himself.

Carmen nodded as he spoke, his words sounded reasonable, almost like he knew what they were supposed to be doing. He seemed like a proud, confident man and if Carmen had been in a different setting she could see herself being drawn to him. However, here she felt so out of place and nervous that it was the last thing on her mind. She was just trying to remember to breathe properly at this moment. She nodded her head at his word, "Yes please," she agreed. The sound of alcohol might ease her nerves a little and make it more manageable. Plus the idea of someone walking in on them whilst they were chatting was less than ideal. She followed behind him into a different room and she let her eyes move around the wall, the furniture even the little ornaments that sat about. Everything was pristine, everything was perfect. But most all, everything looked really, really expensive. She told him her drink order which was just a gin and tonic and she took the glass from him as she continued to absorb every inch of the room. One day soon, she'd be living here and she couldn't quite see herself lying on the couch in a pair of cycling shorts and a sports bra. That might not go down too well. She took a sip from the glass as she looked over at him, "So .. what do you do with your time?" she asked, feeling a little braver now she had alcohol in her hand.

Ayah's eyes continued to wander around the walls of the grand living room. There were paintings and other pieces of decor that she knew cost a fortunate. She couldn't believe that a family as small as Alexander's could possess so much. Ayah began to feel relieved once she took a small sip from her cocktail. She hoped that the alcohol would actually lighten the mood. Ayah couldn't help but let out a small chuckle, excessive is an understatement. "Is it?" She sarcastically questioned. Ayah wasn't really in the mood to think about his extravagant home at this time. Ayah's main goal was to figure out if the guy she was betrothed to had a good head on his shoulders. So far he was sending mixed signals. Although he was handsome, he seemed to talk a lot, which didn't rub Ayah the right way. Ayah was extremely thankful that their parents were gone because she could ask him a few questions that they might've not deemed appropriate. "How do you feel about this?" Ayah asked, referring to their arranged marriage. She refused to beat around the bush. Ayah was curious to see if they had similar thoughts on the matter.

Charles smiled at her drink choice. He liked gin as well, although, he preferred it without a chaser. Charles noticed that Carmen's eyes were roaming the room. He let out a light chuckle before taking another sip of gin, "If you like it here, I'm afraid you won't like my place. It's much smaller than this." Charles lived downtown in one of the nicest penthouses the city had to offer. Although it was still lavish, it was like a shack compared to his parent's grand home. "Usually, I spend my time investing and working at my dad's company." He mentioned but it was very obvious that Charles did not prefer to talk about work, but he knew that it would be a good way for them to get acquainted with each other. "Other than work, I like to spend my time traveling and giving back to the community." There was much more that he liked to do but he figured it would be best if he answered vaguely. Charles took another sip of gin, "How about you?"

Alexander took a sip of his drink and this time he heard a genuine laugh. Or well it was more like a chuckle but still, it wasn't as sarcastic as the last. That gave him a small ounce of hope. Ayah was beautiful and he knew she was in a difficult situation from having to leave her home and her family. He didn't blame her one little bit for being angry and upset over the whole thing. He was overthinking because he knew he had a big mouth and couldn't keep his mouth shut at the best of times anyway. He took another sip of the scotch as he heard her blunt question. He raised an eyebrow at her and took a moment to choose his words carefully before he spoke. "I love my family dearly and I would do anything for them. However, if I had any say in the matter .. then it wouldn't be happening. I wouldn't make someone I loved do anything like this," he said, finally. If he was being honest, he'd never really pondered about his feelings on the matter. He always knew that it was going to happen so he instead chose to ignore it until the time came. There was no point in getting angry because it would happen either way.  "What are your thoughts?" he asked her, curious to know although he had a feeling he knew how she was feeling just from her body language.

Carmen took a sip out of her glass when she heard him speak. Her eyes moved over to him as she raised an eyebrow at him, "You don't live here?" she asked, actually a little surprised. She'd assumed he still lived with his parents. But now that she thought about it, he was a grown man and still living with your parents, whether they were rich or not, was slightly strange. Her stream of thought was broke off when he started to speak again. The first thing he spoke about was work and she noted that he worked with his father. She'd assumed that he would work within the family business but it was nice to hear what he did besides work too. Travelling was something she'd always dreamed of doing but she didn't have the time nor the money. Giving back to the community was something that spiked her interest and she wondered exactly what he did. Either way it was an act of kindness and that was something she admired. She then realised he'd stopped speaking and it was her turn, "I'm a nurse down at the local hospital so that takes up most of my time," she said with a nod of her head. Part of the agreement with her parents was that if she got to finish her education she would willingly be subjected to an arranged marriage. She'd only graduated 6 months ago but she'd thrown herself into a job in fear of the idea it may be taken away from her when she became married. "I like to paint too when I have the time, cooking as well," she added, sipping on her own drink. The alcohol was definitely helping.

Ayah appreciated the honesty in Alexander's answer. She was thrilled to know that he wasn't actually enthused about this entire fiasco either. It made Ayah feel a bit closer to him and little more comfortable with opening up to him. Ayah sipped on her drink for a moment as she gathered her thoughts. "I agree with you. I would never make my children do anything like this." She knew that honesty was key, so she wanted to be one hundred percent upfront with him. "I'm not going to lie, I don't have many positive feelings about this. But since we both don't have any say in the matter, I guess I should start to get on board, huh?" She didn't want to seem too harsh but she also did not want to sell him this dream of her being the picture perfect wife. Ayah sipped on her drink until it was empty. She looked over at Alexander and tried her best to read his body language but it was a failed mission, she didn't have a clue to what he was thinking or how he felt about her answer.

Charles grinned as he listened to Carmen speak. He admired that she had a stable career. Most of the girls that he had dated in the past were not as career-driven as Carmen seemed. Many of them were solely interested in living in the lap of luxury and had no urge to work since they came from opulent families as well. He appreciated that Carmen was the opposite of that. Charles was a firm believer in opposites attract. Although arranged marriages weren't very commonplace, he hoped that they could make it work, or at least attempt to. Whilst she was still talking, he reached over for gin and refilled their glasses. Charles took another swig of gin before speaking. "Oh viola, we have something in common. Although I'm not very good at it, I like to attempt to paint. Most of the time my 'masterpieces' end up looking like blob." Charles laughed at himself and hoped that she enjoyed his corny joke. He was hoping that maybe she could show him the correct way to paint since he failed horribly at it.

Alexander was going to mention children but he was worried the word would have made her recoil even faster so he chose to leave it out. Although his answer had seemed to spike her interest because now she was talking to him a little bit more which was good. He wanted to see if their personalities matched because it would make this situation so much easier. If they didn't get along or had conflicting views it would probably make everything 10 times worse. "I'm not gonna force you to get on board with it because if you're not feeling it then nobody can force you," he told her honestly with a shrug of his shoulders. "But what I can tell you is that when all this happens and we say I do, nothing is expected of you," he told her as he reached over for her empty glass. He drained his own and refilled both of them before sliding it back over to her, pushing it with his index finger, "I don't stay here either so you won't need to be around, well, this," he said, gesturing around the room. "But if you'd feel more comfortable here then that is an option too, of course," he said. He rarely visited his parents unless it was really important. Of course he spoke to them regularly but he didn't have much interest in coming back to the home unless it was completely necessary. "I don't know if anything I just said has helped in anyway but I just wanted to get it out there," he told her, lifting the glass to his lips as he took a sip.

Carmen watched as he filled her glass up with some more gin before topping it off with tonic. She could already feel the effects of the first glass and warned herself to slow down. If she ended up drunk on their first meeting her parents would kill her. She smiled at his words, "You're just an abstract painter," she reassured him with a light laugh, "Those sell for good money too." At least there was one thing they had in common and it made her feel a little better. She'd been worried that they would be so polar opposite that they'd have nothing to talk about. She took a sip out of her glass as her long nails tapped against the glass, "You said you liked to travel?" she asked him, "Where have you been?" Travelling was something she'd hoped to do but she'd just had no time to do it as well as getting her education. She'd been on a girls holiday once but there were so many other places she wanted to go to, so many things she wanted to see. It was such a big world and she'd been stuck here for 22 years in the same town. "I'd like to travel," she admitted to him with a nod of her head, wondering if they would be able to once they were married. It was more the fear pf the unknown that got her worried. She didn't know what would happen, what would change after they got married.

Ayah smiled a bit. At least there's that. Ayah was confused to say the least, and she didn't really know how to feel. One moment she hated the predicament that she was in, and in the next she felt bad for expressing how she the way she felt. The last thing she wanted to do was to be mean to Alexander. She just didn't know how to put her emotions to the side. She placed her hands in her lap and thought for a moment. "I appreciate you trying to make things work. I'm just a little afraid, so I'm sorry if I'm saying all of the wrong things." She took another sip of her drink before fiddling with her fingers, indicating that she was still nervous. "As fas as living arrangements go, I think I'd want to stay with my husband." She said jokingly, trying to lighten the mood. She didn't think she could really survive living with his parents, she was sure that she'd say the wrong thing to them as well.

Charles laughed, "Well, if that's the case, I need to switch careers." Charles was surprised that he was actually enjoying himself. He didn't picture this moment going this well. He continued to laugh before answering her next question. "Yeah, traveling is actually one of my favorite things to do. I've been to most of Europe, West Africa, some parts of  Asia and I love the Caribbean islands. Where would you want to travel to first?" He answered vaguely because he didn't want to seem like he was boasting but he's seen a far share of the world. He shifted in his seat once he began to fill the effect of the alcohol. That's enough for now. He wanted to continue drinking but he didn't want her parents to think that he couldn't handle his liquor and he did not want to embarrass his parents. He had his fair share of doing that when he was younger and tried his hardest to keep a squeaky clean reputation nowadays.

Alexander nodded as she spoke, "It's just a weird situation so I get why you're afraid, no need to apologise," he told her. He liked the honestly that was coming from her and he'd rather that than have her completely close up and not tell him anything. Communication was the key to any relationship and even if they were to just have a platonic bond through this then they had to be able to tell each other what was happening. He cracked a smile at her joke, "Yeah I think we're a bit old to be living with the parents," he agreed with a slight laugh. "I have a guest room too so you can have your own space," he reassured her. He could only imagine how she was feeling, having to leave her parents and move into a house with a man she'd only known for a month. If he was in her position he'd be afraid too. He drank the rest of the liquid in the glass before standing up, "Do you want to go for a walk? I could show you the gardens if you'd like?" he asked, wondering if moving around would ease her nerves a little. He always felt like he was being watched in this house, even though he knew they didn't have cameras. Or at least he hoped not, after some of the stuff he used to get up to when he was younger.

Carmen sat up a little straighter, listening intently as he spoke about where he had been. It was pretty vague and she was guessing there had been many more place than that but she wasn't surprised. If she came from a wealthy family she would make use of it and travel constantly too. "I'd like to go to the Caribbean islands too. Then there's France, Italy, Australia. I'd also quite like to go to Japan and maybe India .. " she trailed off, meeting his eyes again before she smiled. "So basically I want to go everywhere," she told him with another little laugh. She took another few sips out of her glass as she finished her second drink off and pushed the glass to the side, "So, how are you feeling about all of this?" she asked, wanting to know if they were on the same page. They'd broken the ice a little and now she felt comfortable asking him. She wanted to know if he felt just as upset as she was that she was being forced into something she didn't want.
