Poll: do you believe the teams are doing a fair job of choosing dress up comp winners?
objective ways to pick winners

for dress up competitions, there should be a rubric of some sort that objectively picks winners.
i remember when i was part of a team, and all we did was just choose the top ones we personally liked. but everyone has different aesthetics/perceptions of beauty, as well as varying interpretations of the theme.

here are some examples of how you could judge outfits.
theme - how closely ur outfit tied into the theme
unique - self explanatory; like how unique ur take on the theme was

with this way, i know that a point system (assigning points to each category for EACH outfit submitted) is NOT effective. i totally get that. but i want to reiterate the fact that we really don't know how users get chosen. "the best outfit" doesn't provide anything for me as a participant. every single time i submit an entry in, it's really just a hit or miss. i always forget about the competition for a while too.

another idea is maybe there could be different "titles" u can win.
"simple yet effective" - ur outfit was simple but still pulled off the theme
this could help users who want to use their own wb, but dont have too many items ig
"extravagant" - the opposite^

i think this is a more fair way to choose winners. no hate, but i see the same people winning (and yes, it's because they have great taste!) but what are the standards teams are judging on? this idea would hopefully allow for winners from a diverse group of users!

also a smaller, maybe less popular idea: u can't win like 5 dress up competitions in a row? just to even out the playing ground? idk maybe this could just be an individual user thing, like if u personally see urself winning a lot...perhaps u could step back for the next 1-2 competitions? up to u tho! just thinking out loud

disclaimer: this is coming from someone who has never won a WWIB or ET dress up competition lol

what are your thoughts?

I feel like the way they choose the winners now are fine?
I assume they pick the winners from how well the outfit fits the theme + how good it is?

I can easily say this since I've won quite a lot of the wwib comps, but then again, I do use around 1-2 hours per set I make.

I can't see how they could judge more "fairly" tho, except for letting everyone know what they're looking for? But again I feel like it's clearly stated in the theme?

yeah bc I always do kinda minimalistic but I feel like maxist(?) outfits win like all the time. they obv. create a larger feel of the theme and may seem better on the first impression and catching your eye but they aren't necessarily better because of that.

Like this is just speculations because as stated, we don't know how the winners are picked.

i agree with all of this

tbh most of the time i think what they rly base it on is how much they like you as a person, no matter how good ur outfit was or not
like i feel there's an unfairness going on

but also one idea could maybe be that everyone would send in their outfits, i'm thinking like a separate website, and it all is done anonymous so they can't see what user sent in what
THEN they (the team) do their own voting thing and vote according to the theme etc etc
for some reason i think that would make the winners for each comp more varied? if that makes sense
since they would have no ability of knowing which users it's from unless they're an expert at telling which outfit was made by which user

these can't really be 'objective' measure tho. whether or not something fits the theme well, or how 'unique' it is are subjective.

i guess it's expected to judge based on theme but thats usually not the case, i don't think.
a lot of times it's a very broad theme that is incredibly hard to judge for.

the november WWIB is a tiny moustache. its a good example of how BROAD some of these comps can be. granted, most WWIBs are abt making an outfit w a certain top/hair from mp but if theres not clear "rubric" or way to judge, there's no basis for choosing who has a better outfit.

i feel like there's a certain way to dress urself on here that ppl are drawn to, but it's hard to fit into that box if u have a different aesthetic or style.

i'm not necessarily complaining abt how they pick winners. i just want to create more space and room for everyone to express themselves individually.
yes!! this is exactly how i feel
ik the types of outfits that win but thats just now how i make my outfits! even when i try, it doesnt seem to fit that aesthetic that always gets chosen

well actually it IS anonymous

when i voted for comps held by other teams, there were no users attached to the outfit, we would just copy and paste the ones we liked into our reply and ig someone from the team holding it would go in and count whoever had the most votes.

it's mainly the aesthetic (i want to say fantasy?) that continuously win dress up comps. rarely do "street fashion" fits win if that makes sense.

ah i get what you mean.
i was just hoping that there could be clearer lines drawn to make this AS objective as teams could

i guess if a majority of team members feel like, using the example of "unique," an outfit is a fresh take on the theme, then majority wins? that part was mainly abt creating diversity within the outfits that win.

I understand where you're coming from for sure, but I don't think as of now at least that there's much that can be done with how WWIB voting works.
Since the whole idea is literally "who wore it best?" it's hard to really avoid it being subjective.
The only changes really will be based on who's on the team atm.

I'd also like to explain how WWIB voting works a bit for those who may have some concerns about fairness overall. Those voting don't know which outfit belongs to who, we just number the entries to make counting votes much easier. (The media hosting WWIB will keep that info saved somewhere as backup).
It's 100% based on the preferences of each member so yes, it's definitely subjective.

but it's easy to just check the thread tho ?? u can't rely on people doing an honest job when there's a thread to look at

depends if the goal with the competition is to participate with a valid entry or to actually dress subjectively the best to a theme or with an item

^^

We know the minimalist vs maxist outfits are a concern with many users, so in SMT we have discussed hosting WWIB's with more casual themes or item limitations.
