It was quiet on the road.
There was no car on the road in the middle of the night, I suppose it made sense. Complete silence, the only noise coming from my rumbling car, which could break down at any moment.
I tried to pay it no attention and turned the radio a little louder.
Another kilometer in complete darkness passed, until there was something in the headlights of my car. It sat still, staring at the approaching vehicle.
Unmoving.
I brake, hard. As eager as I was to get home, I didn't want to run over a cat. Even if it was a black one.
I wasn't one for superstition, but my grandmother's cat had always sent shivers down my spine, and now so did all the others.
Though, as I brake, my car releases its final breath. Great.
I stare at the cat, still sitting there, licking its paws.
I could have sworn it winked at me as it walked off towards the trees. My eyes land upon a house, hidden behind the trees. That must be where the cat is from.
I get out and follow the cat, as my car broke I have nowhere else to go.
Surprisingly enough, someone actually opens the door when I knock.
A young woman is standing there, with dark hair and intense green eyes.
"Good evening," she muses.
Something felt off then. Maybe it was the smell surrounding the house, or her bright eyes, or the venom laced in her voice.
I ignored it and explained my case. She let me in, a smile curling her lip.
I shouldn't have.
Now I can't get out.
