El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday that involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and remember friends and family members who have passed. It is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed, and is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.
Traditions for the holiday include honoring the deceased with calaveras (sugar or clay skulls) and cempazúchitl (marigold flowers), building ofrendas (home altars) with the favorite foods and drinks of the departed, and visiting graves to offer these gifts. The celebration also involves giving friends calaveras, sharing pan de muerto (sweet bread) with loved ones, and writing humorous mock epitaphs for friends, called calaveras literarias.
