Alsonlike the bare minimum of me goin like erm shouldn’t we put him in his cage or at least lower the table as he’s waking up so he doesn’t fall…. And vet was like nahhhh I’ve never had that happen,,, like yeah gurl  cos you get 2 cats per month I’ve already had a cat wake up and start wriggling during x rays in my 5 weeks of interning
yeah also thats like??? not hard to just do
like just to be sure for the case that it ever happens
Yeah and this is like example of them just not having proper routines for the small animals, like let’s ignore the drug and illegal surgery lmao, At pet clinic I was at they just like automatically put the cat in cage either as soon as it showed signs of waking or just right after giving antidote to the narcotics n made sure it had airways unobstructed etcetc, here they just didn’t like think of that sorta thing cos they’re not used to it??? Like why even take these patients atp….

I would say I’m sure they handle horse surgery better but their op unit failed hygiene and safety inspection 🫠

i think big animal anasthesia is really scary like u have to support them going down right? and what do you do if they get up too fast when the wake up n hurt themselves ,,, is the myth that u have to put down a horse if it breaks a leg tue

You like sedate them so they do eepy they lay down in a room with basically nothing in it so they can’t get hurt or damage anything and then you tie their hooves to a crane thing and you weeee lift it upside down and push it to operation table then you do the same thing going back and laying down on tha floor and wait for it to wake x-x

if it wakes up during surgery you are screwed, the horse is screwed, and the equipment is screwed weeee

its not rly true because breaking a leg can also just be a fracture etcetc but I wouldn’t be surprised if many people would choose to have it put down if it’s a major break because of all the surgery n suffering they horse would be put through to heal it only to likely have issues with it the rest of its life. But horses get leg injuries all of the time, it’s just that they become more ”useless” if they have an injury and can’t perform whatever work you want it to do

If you exclude semination leg issues is like 80% of the cases we’ve gotten while I’m at the clinic

tho granted most of its joint issues not fractures

My running theory is that horse people view animals different than small pets people
im both and i view them all equally cuz i actually prefer to spend more time with animals than humans lol, i even have a degree as a horse caretaker
but i've definitely witnessed my fair share of rough practices etc among vets and horse people

Yeahh there’s like varying degrees of it in the clinic I’m at now too, I just think horses fall into this weird inbetween of being a pet and a tool for some people and it kinda affects the horse people mentality, though I’d say it’s similar to the mindset you see in dog breeders as well ngl, but horse vets seem to be way more involved in the horse breeding process so I suppose you gotta have a finger in that pie as a horse vet x-x
