I am actually also considering doing some kind of list or "high effort" masterpost of magazines worth spending time on due to content and love put into them. I try to stalk and find the good ones in the official "promote your magazine" thread, but also do keyword searches in Scoop once or twice weekly.
We are hoping to do some more indepth stuff for later magazines (and maybe less recommendations and maybe more author spotlights ?? we don't quite know yet) but it's just 1) very hard to find specific topics to write on and 2) hard to do research on book-related topics specifically. I did a school project on how YA can help form and shape teens in highschool, and I am kind of considering doing something similar for an issue, but I'm not quite sure yet. Also, making articles won't make it so I can read them.
I hope you've had a nice day!
And of course !!
yeah, a lot of them are users who've been banned or left due to the climate, but I couldn't be sure of that when I registered, so alas here we are
Well, if you ever want to do that, I'll help you search for more!!
uhhhh, honestly, author spotlights could be fun. I also feel like many book review magazines focus heavily on series', which feels a bit weird to me to recommend 4 books of the same series and then portray it like it's a completely different thing. like sure, it's different books, but usually it's a whole arc that spreads over a few books, so in theory for most of them it's still just one big story with maybe one part of it being better written or the plot just generally getting better or worse as the story progresses (and thus the books keep going on)
a bit like series... few people would review series' like this from episode to episode. some do, but that's a completely different appraoch
okay, this is me basically just bitching because I feel like some book series recommendations look like I get a recommendation for 3 books when in fact I often only get 1 actual story and then extended packs to it. and if I don't like it, I don't like the 3 of them. otherwise when it's different ones, there would be a chance for one that still would be up my alley.
(hope you know what I mean. this was more of a "I'm not happy with the general reviewing landscape, so I'm all here or shining light on the authors and then having a broader spectrum)
Oh, that sounds like a fun subject!
If you ever need ideas on what one could do, I do have a small list of topics I personally find interesting and would love seeing discussed in magazines.
yay
*celebratory dance*
Yeah, that's honestly fair. No reason to get a sour experience due to bad apples on a website honestly.
That would be absolutely nice !! Question is, whether it's possible to make a long list at all atm.
I looooove deep dives into authors! I am waiting for an excuse to do it with Ursula K. Le Guin, who I also think would be interesting to do articles on, because her mom was an anthropologist, so her work is heavily inspired by culture and trying to make good representation. I get the series thing! I think series are good to review to some extent, because sometimes you start a series you really enjoy, and then it just goes downhill. If people are making content on books, then it's easier to keep recommending the series you're actively reading and happy about reading, compared to reading that plus finding something to make content on.
I do however agree that it's possible to compare to tv shows, and in some way it's misplaced to focus heavily on something, where if book 1 didn't catch the audience, then tough luck.
I also think a deep dive into an author is better to do if it's not just a series, but like Stephen King or Neil Gaiman or similar, who writes a lot of standalones, where you don't come back to them due to one interesting plot they made up, but instead due to their writing in general.
I might have to contact you then
The YA article might pop up at some point, and the articles for next magazine has been planned atm.
possible, but probably a lot of organisational work depending on how to tag it or so, because else it will just be a fucking long list of links no one will be able to wade through properly
