he gave his heart to make the contract with calcifer, aka calcifer is now his "heart"
because she was cursed, and she gets "younger" again any time shes confident in herself basically
which contract, the one with calcifer? or the thing with the king forcing howl to serve in the war 
love basically
the kings witch takes in apprentices to then turn them into monsters basically... to fight 
he was basically the whole reason for the war, the sides fought because the prince was missing
