Most of the books I've read where it's been a thing it's mostly been about making the characters do something, where it doesn't really add to the world-building, is over fast and feels awkward with all of the other stuff happening.
thats fair honestly.
you should give hunger games a try. its very good. the movies are garbage in comparison

its one of the only plot centric tournaments that i think is well done

bc the games is a cultural event that has grown out of the world and how it rebuilt after war and rebellion. and you get to meet a lot of the culture. as well as people from different districts during the tournament. there's a lot of showing the difference between the districts and the capitol and such

My brain tends to mush them together when there are more than one chronological timeline, or several pov characters. I know she began healing at least towards the end even if she was far away from. I liked it. It was good. Especially when the secondhalf begins and she begins seeing what happened in a different light. It was also kinda relatable in the way that she kinda drowned in her own perspective - which also was his perspective that he used to manipulate her w - so it was good when she finally got some more perspectives from the outside that actually stuck with her.

I don't read a lot of contemporary tho. I'm saying this as I read my next contemporary (satire), Yellowface.

If you're into historical books I really can recommend The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden. I honestly don't really like historical fiction, but this book is a perfect blend of historical and fantasy, and it really left an impression on me. If you liked Katherine Arden's other series (If you've read it) this is a must.

I'll throw a rec for Faebound by Saara El-Arifi, even though it's "technically" romantasy. I'm kinda sad about it suddenly becoming a catch-all phrase instead of hitting books like ACOTAR and similar, because I don't feel like the romance is the deciding factor in this one - even though it's present in a lot of the book. The world building is beauitul.

Also it's sci-fi, but I'll always recommend Murderbot - they're all very short books, but I have a blast with every single one of them. It's enough sci-fi to get some of the fantasy feel IMO.
I looked at the first one at the store today. It's slowly edging towards me but it's been months in the making so not convinced yet. 

I have the warm hands of ghosts hardcover from easter. I just never got into it

Faebound... Sounds kinda bad Idk what to say like very mid vibes. 

I don't like scifi but thanks. 
It's really nice! If you like Gibson's writing I also think the rest of her books are worth picking up.

Faebound is slept on. The world-building is really nice, and it has some very good things happening (drum magic is fun) and I think it'll get better as it progresses. It's not quite gotten the reception it deserves imo, and I think part of it, is because it seems scary and because it's often defined as romantasy, where it doesn't really fit.

You're really missing out! But I get it. I was sceptical to Murderbot when I started, but the books work really well.
i'm gonna give ghost another chance. in time.

there were so many people in my group that read it when it released and people had very mid reviews. i think it's just gonna be postponed into maybe later bc there are also just a lot of plots i'm tired of even if the worldbuilding is good

It was. I had to take a lot of breaks listening to it. And normally I use audiobooks when going to sleep, but this had a very negative effect on me, and I had to switch to another book for sleep instead, and only listen to this when I was awake and mentally okay.
The narrator was amazing at separating the two periods of time, so that helped a lot for my brain, but otherwise I'd probably have had the same experience.
And yea, her very slow realization of a lot of things was masterly done, honestly. I heard an interview with the author and the narrator at the end of the audiobook and it was super interesting to hear a lot of the thought process of how the writing was done.

And lol. I know Babel love that one, while I didn't like it very much :') Had a loooooot of problems with it. Hope you'll like it tho!

Those are nice. I like when we get more insight into stories.

i'm on chapter 3 so far. it has been funny once. idk i hope it gets better i guess bc so far it's kinda tame. i need something higher stake to go on or else contemporary anything bores me
