FT/NT/ET: How has Cancer impacted you?

I feel like all of us know someone who has had cancer or has cancer at some point in our lives, so we'd like to take the time to ask you about your experiences with cancer. Have you yourself had cancer? A loved one? What kind of cancer had they had? How have you dealt with that experience. If you haven't already, please check out NT's article on Cancer. It is very informative.

I realize that this may be a very sensitive topic, so I'd like to thank all of you who decide to participate in the conversation about cancer. I made a poll for those of you who like to participate anonymously.

Ahh my aunt has breast cancer ://

Breast cancer runs in my family and is one of the common ways for people in my family to die. I really hope research keeps at it in finding solutions, especially ones that are less harmful to the body ie radiation.

That sucks. I have many family members who have had breast cancer, as well.

December of last year my aunt's boyfriend of 8 years passed away from liver cancer. It started out as cancer in one of his eyes which he had removed. He was like an Uncle to me.
This summer my grandmother passed away from breast cancer. It was very possible she could have made it but due to psychological problems she was unable to and ended up passing in the hospital.
She had it once before when I was very young and had a mastectomy.

It tends to run in my family though not through genetics.
Ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and a few others that my parents haven't quite mentioned.

I usually do the volunteer walks for pancreatic cancer though.

My great aunt had breast cancer and passed away a couple of years ago. She was a big part of my childhood and it was a pretty big blow to find out she passed away. However, I dealt with it by confining with my cousins and remembering how lively she was during my childhood.

My grandfather recently passed away this year due to cancer (I believe it was lung cancer). It's been hard since he also was a big part of my childhood and I was so used to seeing him. He passed away as soon as we found out so it's still hard to think that he's not here anymore. However, even though its hard to keep remembering this fact, I take it one day at a time to mourn his passing and just remembering the times we shared.

I'm happy to share. Before I was born my dad had melanoma, or skin cancer. My mom says it was the hardest part of her life watching him go through chemotherapy and other experimental treatments. On the day they married my mom cried because she didn't know how much longer he had. They surgically removed the cancer. He has a big scar on his neck that blends into the wrinkles of his skin when he turns his head. Then once he was finally in remission, they were worried they wouldn't be able to have children for a few years they tried. Now my dad's been cancer free for thirty years and he sees the doctor every six months to check for weird marks on his skin. He says use sunscreen and always get the back of your neck.

Both of my aunties have had cancer. One of them survived but sadly one didn't. My aunty who is still alive today had breast cancer and the aunty who died had cancer twice. Not sure what type it was exactly but I know it was caused by smoking and was typically found in old men. She died in January 2011, six years ago next month. Although it was an awful thing to happen she has left behind a positive legacy as she asked her parents to set up a charity that would help people suffering like she did or family members of the person. The charity is still running today and offers treatments such as relaxation, massages, shiatsu and reflexology. They also provide a service that takes people who need to treatment to the hospital where they can get their treatment as it isn't close to the local area so this helps people get the treatment they need. They also have volunteers who can be there for people who just need a good chat to get things off of their chest.

That's rough. I'm sorry about your uncle (aunt's boyfriend) and your grandmother. I think it's hard that many people who get cancer end up getting it more than once. That's just not fair, but neither is life.

If your parents didn't mention them than how did you find out about them?

i'm pretty sure one of my grandmothers had it, but the main reason as to why she died was out of heartbreak i guess. her husband, my grandfather, died a few months months prior to her death.

My grandpa has cancer. I don't remember the names but the first one he got was in his leg and the one he has now is prostate I'm pretty sure. I don't really talk about it with him. I try to spend my time with him in positive ways. He was actually supposed to die a few years ago but he is still here. I'm so happy that I was able to grow up to know him and he didn't die before I got to make all the wonderful memories I did with him. He is not going to out live the cancer but he will have at least been able to thoroughly meet all his grand children and live a happy life. He is very into music and still plays the guitar actually. He is a very good cook as well. I like to talk about the good more than the bad. I hope this wasn't too personal.
