i guess one significant factor in the amount of bilingual speakers are the amount of chinese people who has to talk two different chinese languages, and that you probably talk two languages in India if you aren't native to Hindi

i don't think we will ever get good sources on it because stuff like that is often self-reported so some people claim they speak two or more languages while only actually speaking ones, and others have like "i don't speak more than one language because i'm so bad at the others i know so i'll say monolingual so i'm not posing for something i am not"
