i could maybe imagine that this is a way to manipulate which items get included in the bonus set each week? since the system chooses items from a set at random (thats how i understood it to work at least)

Nope.
We have to manually set the items - even for bonus sets which is a pain.
Only reason the other items aren't showing up is just because the rest of the set hasn't been allocated :3 I had to ask Kaj to set it for us haha
