How did you complete the battle thing?

I'm just wondering if there's a correlation between how you completed the battle request thing and whether you got the top or not?

I sent a battle request to an inactive user, never battled them/never got request accepted, and then tried to get the reward but got nothing. Anyone who didn't get the top but actually got their request accepted and a battle completed?
