The Woods Creek Mystery

As the funeral had ended, and everyone had gathered at the Richmonds' house for the wake, Miles started paying more attention who was actually there, noticing Riley. He felt a knot in his stomach form, and instinctively looked away before they would get eye contact with each other. He wasn't sure why he did it, he just felt bad that she was there, even though they saw each other at the bar constantly. It was ages ago since they dated anyway, and they had been on polite terms with each other for a few years now, so there was no real reason for him to avoid her. And yet he did at that moment. It felt wrong for them to meet at this funeral in particular.

He headed for Holden when he saw his shot, greeting Mrs. Richmond and Rachel, then looking to Holden, as if to get an answer to why Rachel was there. The last Miles heard, the two of them had had an awful divorce, with some infidelity in the mix of it, so he had no clue why they would want to be in the same room with each other again, yet alone at Holden Sr.'s funeral.

"It was a nice eulogy," he remarked at Holden, trying to look sympathetic. He knew how Holden's relationship had been with his dad for the past many years, and felt like maybe parts of his eulogy were just for show. But what did he know, he thought. Might have been real. Miles himself, however, wasn't the least bit torn up about the death of Holden Sr., only shocked that it had been a murder.

––

Rachel was standing faithfully by the Richmond's side as Miles approached them, and gave him a somber nod, before walking away to grab a drink. She had never really gotten to know Miles, but had always felt pity for him, based on the things Holden had told her about him over the years. How he worked in a bar, never got an education, never had any true ambitions. She thought Miles had a responsibility to keep up his family's legacy, and had let both his family and Holden down as the years passed. Honestly, she was relieved when he and Holden had begun to lose touch over the years.
If she dreamed of getting back together with Holden however, she would be wise to keep those thoughts to herself.

––

Lou had waited for people to start scuttling off towards the wake before following them in her car. She was reluctant, still, about showing up, but did it anyway. She just needed an in, that's all, she thought to herself. It should be easy, just lay low and wait for the time to pounce.
As she entered the large mansion, she tried blending in the best she could, in order to scour the place out before asking any questions. She wouldn't want to get kicked out immediately, before getting the chance to get some intel, so she would have to wait until the time was right – and it sure was, when she spotted Celia, whom she recognised from her college days. Unsure whether Celia would recognise her, she approached her cautiously.

"Celia Walker?" She asked, smiling slightly. "You took journalism at Berkeley, right?"

(figured they did the same course otherwise it would probably be impossible for them to have met being 2 years apart and there being a million courses at college haha)

The flask had become Riley's dearest friend as the hours passed. The funeral itself felt like an eternity wasted, and she was pissed that Rick didn't at least apologize for standing her up. It was odd, walking into the mansion. She was reminded of the countless parties she had attended there, courtesy of Holden Jr. What a time that was. Of course, she was way beyond those times and she didn't really miss it all too much. Her high school years were drama filled, trying to work things out with Miles constantly, fighting to keep her grades up so she could eventually leave and become something.

But then again, she might have ended up right where she started. At least that's how she felt when she caught Miles looking away. Damn, this was awkward. She wasn't going to say hi, she knew they'd have to talk sometime. He knew things about the Richmond family, things that could help the investigation. Rick had suggested he might be a possible suspect, which of course had enraged Riley. She knew him, he wasn't capable of that. Maybe she was blinded by their history, surely he had done horrible things. Maybe the bar wasn't doing so well. She made a note to look into that.

_

Holden was warming up to the feeling of having Rachel there. Not for him, of course. But she seemed to offer a great shoulder to cry on for his mother, Lauren. And he preferred not to be stuck with that dreadful task. When Miles approached, Rachel and Lauren seemed to help themselves to drinks. He could finally breathe.

"Was it?" He shrugged, most of it was his mothers writing but he did improvise. He liked talking in public, made him miss the days when he did it in a court setting. He took a sip of the old fashioned he had in his hand, but the ice had melted and it was practically water.

"I gotta be honest, I didn't think you'd show today.", He commented and took another sip. "Figured you wouldn't wanna leave Kev in charge for too long", he then chuckled, leaning against the wall, noting that Riley was glaring at the two. He never understood the relationship between Miles and Riley. She seemed like a bore, and appearance wise, Holden thought Miles could do better.

_

Celia jumped slightly when approached by a redheaded woman. She opened her mouth, only to close it again. She tried to place the woman when she said Berkley and it suddenly clicked.

"Oh, right. I'm sorry, Louise, is it?" She didn't socialize too much in college, spent most of her time with her nose buried in a book. Until she met her husband, of course.

"Oh, he'll be fine," Miles smiled, "the whole town showed up here, it seems, so he won't have much to do." It was baffling, honestly, how many people had shown up at now at the wake, whom Miles didn't know. For one, he noticed his sister talking to someone he had never seen before. Mr. Richmond sure knew a lot of people. Probably not all good, either.

He took a sip of his drink and eyed Holden, with a questioning look. "How are you feeling?" He glanced over at Rachel and Mrs. Richmond, then back at Holden. Miles didn't want to pry too much. It had been a while since the two of them had seen each other, and they had never talked about feelings much. Mostly just girls, parties, that kind of stuff. He was curious though, as to Rachel's presence and Holden's feelings about the funeral.

Lou flinched slightly, feeling her plan of going in with a fake name about to be quashed in the first minute of her entrance. She wouldn't give up immediately, though, so she tried with a casual lie. "Oh, uhm, just Lou, actually. Lou Taylor," she said, hoping she was convincing enough. She wasn't a perfect liar, but not a bad one either. She hoped Celia hadn't paid that much notice to her in college, that she could just convince her she had remembered her name wrong.

"So, how do you know Mr. Richmond?" she asked.

Holden rubbed his temple and stared at the crowd that had formed in his living room. Well, his father's. He didn't know how he felt, to be completely sincere. His mother didn't exactly provide much room to mourn. Then again, he had lost touch with his father since he moved to Los Angeles. Their last conversation had been a fight over the divorce. Not signing a prenup had been one of Holden's less wise decisions, and Holden Sr never let him forget.

"I'm fine, I guess? I mean, all things considered. The the cops wants to talk to us, but we're taking our time. I mean a murder, seriously?", He shook his head and sat his glass down. "It just feels unreal."

The thought of an interrogation didn't really scare Holden too much. He knew what they'd ask, and he know what questions he was required to answer. He had nothing to hide, but still, law enforcement hadn't been the Richmonds greatest fans as of late. The clean ones at least.

"Oh, right. I didn't really know Holden all too well", Celia said, feeling her stomach turn inside out. It was a lie she had told so many times, but now that he was dead, denying their past felt even harsher.

"I'm just a --", her voice trembled and she could feel tears welling up "a family friend. I went to school with his son, and our families have always been, um, close", she finished, but at that point the tears seemed to have gotten the best of her. "Would you excuse me?" She felt embarrassed, crying in front of someone who was practically a stranger.

Remembering seeing Riley just a few moments ago, Miles wondered the reason she was here. She knew the family, so of course she would be invited to the funeral, but it wouldn't surprise him if she was here on police business in reality.

"Yeah, so unreal," he replied a little absentmindedly. He turned his focus back to Holden and jokingly said, "good thing you're a lawyer then, huh?" in response to his comment about the questioning.

The whole situation seemed unreal to Miles as well. He knew Mr. Richmond had made quite a few enemies throughout his life, but had never imagined anything like this would happen in Woods Creek – such a small town, everyone knows each other, it only seemed like pure stupidity to him, if it in fact were someone from the town who did it. It must have to have been some outsider, he figured and put the thought to rest.

––

Lou didn't get a chance to respond, as she noticed Celia tearing up, before she excused herself and walked away. She sighed and took a big gulp of her martini, finishing it off and placing the glass down on whatever surface was closest to her at the moment, before turning to scanning the room yet again. It was hard to figure out where to start. Before coming to the town, she had done a little research on Mr. Richmond, and had hoped she would get a chance to talk with either his wife or son. She was prepared to be widely hated, as journalists generally are, but this was an even tougher nut to crack, with it being a small, close-knit town and her being an outsider.

Mrs. Richmond, looking rather distraught and on her third drink, Lou noticed, would probably not be the best bet at this moment.

Instead she spotted Holden speaking with another guy, and decided to wait until she could catch him alone, before taking her chance. She approached the two and placed herself a little to the side, not getting too close as not to get noticed, but close enough that she could swoop in, the second Holden was by himself.

Riley decided to call it quits. Rick had finally messaged her back, apparently some crisis at the police station that he thought he'd managed to take care of before the wake ended. She sighed and sat down behind the wheel. Driving while buzzed wasn't exactly responsible, she knew that. But over the years, she had learned to hold her liquor and besides, she didn't know a single investigator who didn't do it sometimes.

It was a quick drive, and on cue, the rain had subsided. She headed straight towards Rick's office, ready to scold.

__

Holden had finished his glass of watered down old fashioned before he decided to find himself another one. He excused himself from Miles and headed towards the open bar. A bottle of his dad's favorite scotch was proudly centered, and his eyes welled up slightly. Damn, he really was gone. Making sure nobody was looking, he opened the cap and took a sip right out of the bottle, reminiscing about the few good memories him and his father had shared as the burning liquid washed down his throat.

Rachel seemed to keep Lauren occupied, wherever they had gone, some had followed, it seemed. The crowd in his living room had reduced in size and he was finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

As Holden was walking away, Miles checked the time on his phone and realised he had a shift at the bar in forty minutes. And with the Richmonds living at the top of a hill, a little bit away from the town center, he should really get going if he didn't want to be late. He was on foot after all, since he and his family had all driven there in his parent's car and he wasn't counting on a ride to the bar from anyone. No one from his family was to be spotted in the living room, and he figured maybe they had gone with Mrs. Richmond, where ever she had gone.

Lucky for him, that meant he could sneak out without having to go through many a goodbyes. As he began his walk to town, the rain also seemed to come to a halt to his relief.

––

The moment Holden left Miles' side, Lou jumped at the cue and followed him to the bar, fetching herself a drink and a seat next to him.

"Nice scotch, huh?" She smirked. "Don't worry, I won't tell."

She was relieved there were hardly any people left in the room with them, giving her a better shot at actually getting some information out of him.

"Riley!" Rick exclaimed, as soon as he saw her. His desk was piled with papers, the whole office a mess in general.
"So sorry, problems with the wife as I was leaving for work this morning... I hope the funeral wasn't too bad to handle on your own?" He said, scratching the back of his neck.

He cleared the chair in front of his desk, which had his coat hanging over it and a few loose papers piled on top, in case she wanted to have a seat.
