All I wanted was to be a nurse. Seriously. Not a world-class dominator or some harbinger of doom. Just a nurse! Now you tell me, if my intentions were so pure, what did I do to rack up all this bad karma? Maybe I was Hitler in a past life.
So it was rainy - not a torrential downpour or anything, but just some light rain. I was driving, which wasn't the best idea due to the fact I had gotten my license suspended in April. But, uh, that's not the point.
I was jamming out to cassettes in my Hyundai Sonata, taking extra care not to hydroplane in the rainy streets, and wasn't paying attention when I turned a corner.
I noticed that there was nobody on the road with me. It lead me deep into the country, and more and more I got a strange feeling. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end, but this feeling just impelled me to drive onward. Being the adventurous person I am, it didn't unnerve me in the slightest that this road was unfamiliar to me.
After seeing a whole lot of nothing, a hospital caught my eye. A sign was posted right next to the road that said, "NOW HIRING"
Well, this place looked pretty old. The voice in my head urged me to turn back. But hey, if they're hiring, I'll take a look inside. It can't hurt.
Right?
I turn into the small, gravelled road, and turn the cassette player off. I look in the rearview mirror and straighten out my yellow baseball cap, and undo a small knot in my long brown hair. I grin, and my green eyes compliment my dark tan skin, my freckles all-too-prevalent for my tastes.
I take a glance down at my two layered shirts and ripped jeans. I rolled my eyes. Totally interview material.
I step out of the car and walk up to the heavy metal door. I open it, and feel a dull pounding in my head. I shake it off, though.
The halls are dark. Too dark. I am instantly suspiscious. What sort of prank is this? Just as I turn to leave, I hear someone.
"Hello? Who are you?" They pause. "Are you a ghost?!"
Just as I am about to answer, someone lets out a low whistle. It didn't fool me, but the girl shrieked.
I hurried over to the source of the noise.
After five minutes of searching, I run into three people. A girl with a black ponytail, who I'm assuming was the screamer, a tall guy with a gold jacket on, and another guy with bright blue hair and a jagged scar down the side of his face.
"Oh! Sorry, I didn't see you guys there. Are you just... here on a whim, or something?"
They all stared at me for a minute. "Oh," I added, "I'm Marcus Valentine."
