actually speaking of fundraising, i think the site that vp is most comparable to is actually a site called goatlings

despite being run even poorly than vp used to be (can you imagine? i won't even get into it but if you wanna see the trainwreck check out this post but also just the blog in general lol the site is a mess) goatlings pulls in a LOT of money each month. partially because a lot of the site features require loot boxes/gambling but again... not getting into that bs for now..........

part of this is because they have a fundraising goal each month for the funds required for maintaining the servers, paying people (well... not really but anyways), etc. and there is a reward for contributing X amount to the fundraiser each month

using this system, despite having a smaller userbase than most petsim sites, they ALWAYS meet their fundraising goal and often go beyond it.

i think a system like this with a set that is rewarded for contributing would go a long way to make sure that the en server remains up and running!
isnt this what mcm is for
I think there where we get our money from, some players drops a lot of money on some sets

The other site i'm still on that is the most similar to vp would be dappervolk. They seem to be doing ok? It seems like they have people leaving but also are still doing fine? Like they still regularly update site, stories, etc. So, in comparison, what I would like from that (that people haven't already said):

More of a storyline/creative outlet? Like it would prolly be weird to have a super detailed story/lore like dv, but like the entire point of this site is allegedly to become a popstar and... there's like literally nothing about that y'know? Like there's a rank and a spamming bodyguard and it's literally pointless? Like no offense but there's no reason for me to care about the whole theme of the site... I'm not sure what specifically to offer as an idea but some to like encourage players to write their own stories or do "popstar" things together? Some kind of questline with rewards (maybe some non-currency or designed items like those diamond things that use newer (<5 years) players don't even know what or why, quality of life benefits, the "pet" concept or something, etc.) that you can put time into if you want? Cause like this site isn't really a... "game" y'know? It's a forum and avatar system not really something to..."do"...

I really like the idea of dv's ad theater system if that could work for us? A way to get ad revenue for vp that people could do optionally as opposed to having ads forced on you all the time. Even if the daily currency rewards were very small (like dv's might translate to like 1000pd/day and 15cr or an item/2 weeks streak of minimum watch time of 30 minutes for 500pd and 500pd more for 60 minutes or smth like that), I would at least run it everyday like I run dv's. You might get less ad revenue doing ads like this but you'd get a lot more than nothing and it would be a lot less controversial because people could choose to do it or not. Idk how they got that set up though... (for those who don't know and are concerned about the 30-60 minutes, you can play the ads in the bg as long as the tab is active, so like i run a different tab over it kinda like "watching" twitch streams for drops if you know that better)

Maybe some like sitewide events? Like they just finished up a simple little event where everyone does quests costing small bits of resources or donations and when sitewide or individual milestones are hit we win prizes. All the events here feel... user hosted? Like the teams (no offense, love all you do teams) is just a few users who run events more often... More like the one where we had to start a new player and get to certain levels that event (but please not that specific event again...)

Don't mean it if I sound harsh anywhere, just my take because this community and admins/teams deserve the best
omg i am also on dappervolk (from the kickstarter launch lol) and honestly i would say the model works well but that quislings really ran their community into the ground... the discord is super dead, the gambling mechanics pissed people off, and the strict rules around accessories definitely annoyed people. despite being an aesthetically beautiful site, the player base is super small and most people ditched their kickstarter goods for flight rising items as soon as possible

but i DO agree that it would be AWESOME to add in a 'story mode' side to going through the different ranks. stuff like getting to name your album and the genre, have the battling feature be updated to allow for group battling for their records to 'top the charts' of the week, stuff like that would be so awesome! it would be COOL to have a in-game 'fashion judgement' sort of thing too, where the full mechanics aren't explained to the players but they can submit a look for judgement by the paparazzi/public/fashion bloggerinas/whatever each day and get rewards based on how it is judged?

i do think ad revenue is an option if the server is DESPERATE for cash but personally i think it should be an absolute last resort if other methods of fundraising are ineffective

yeah for sure! but there is definitely an extra incentive if people know how much it is costing to actually run the site. i know that if i had bought 48 euro worth of cr for mcm, but then saw later in the month that the site was only 12 euro away from reaching the monthly requirements to maintain the site, if i had the 12 euro i would spend it to get the extra sets & help make sure the site is funded for the month!

having the numbers visible to the public helps to motivate people to spend a lil extra to support the site

i think events are a big part of why vp isnt doing so great recently because in the last 2 years(its getting better now) but in the last 2 years for sure there has been a very big LACK of events and when there is events its just like drawing a christmas tree or something and people dont wanna do that.. they wanna dress up all we need is dress up comps and raffles honestly its a dress up game its what people wanna do its reasonably low effort and its still fun.. and it gives new players a chance to get sets to keep or sell for cr if i joined vp recently i genuinely dont think i would stay either there isnt much that we offer thats better than the other sites available. i think our lack of set problem isnt really helping either but i cant blame people for not wanting to design here when the other option is everskies which pays designer extremely well compared to vp where u get nothing for designing unless ur joining a design event
is it okay to ask how the dt is compensated? is it through cr, special sets for just the dt, or is it all purely for the badge?

i can imagine a future scenario where some sets can ONLY be bought with irl money and the designers receiving a commission for each sale of the set, that would be pretty sweet (and is basically what most sites that have irl money currencies already do) @joob

i am sorry i wrote so much text everyone LOL i'm just so glad that thyme encouraged me to come back and play this site and i was literally OVERJOYED to see the hi5 thread explicitly saying no nazis, and to learn that kaj is gone, all the problems i had with the site back in 2017/2018 are gone and i really do want to see this site succeed

i've already committed to spending the 48 euro to get the mcm sets each month just to keep the site going while we try to bring back the population because i am SO PROUD that the community got better and i love all the new designers and everyone is so talented and just

okay i'm sorry one last post:
i think a fun thing to do would be to host 'fandom' dress up competitions and post the results to tumblr tagging the fandom tags
i think it is a good way to advertise and could draw in new players

also as someone who has a lot of original characters, i know i used to LOVE going to encrede's wardrobe and making designs for my ocs so that i could figure out what i wanted them to look like and stuff. that aspect of vp is not talked about as much on site but i could see it being a huge draw for people who produce their own original work and being able to show what their characters look like in the same vein as picrew (except fancier and better because our designers are awesome)

okay okay i shut up now

Personally I think the biggest problem is lack of truly caring from people who can make a difference.

i agree! maybe its because ive always been rich here but i feel like earning cr is rlly easy
i do think if old + low ig sets/items were rereleased, they would have to be very $$$ in cr. hell, you could make them purchasable with ONLY irl money as a way to fundraise
Actually!!! That might not be a bad idea???
