"I would classify this as off site trading"
Basil
Youtube star

we need to have a conversation about allowing commissions on vp.

i think banning commissions/the advertising of commissions is detrimental to the vp community as it discourages artists and prevents them from earning money that they would then be able to invest back into vp. it also stifles creativity.

art for cr/items is allowed, it makes no sense that art can't be sold for usd.

hopefully this doesn't sound critical. but i have been on pretty much every pet site you can imagine, and those that limit art for money tend to breed resentment in their communities.

thank you for reading, feel free to post your opinions on this issue.

Is having a link to a website where an artist displays their work/commission not allowed to be shared onto VP?

who knows

a thread was locked earlier because the person was seeking people who were selling commissions for usd with the above reason (I think I would classify this as off site trading, as it's against the rules to trade anything for real money.)

tbh i agree
its sad that one can’t do that and im sure that whoever locked the thread, agrees w you. kaj is the one who made the rules after all, so all im saying is don’t shoot the messenger (which, in this case, is a mod). i guess it’s because it has financial reasons he doesn’t allow such rules ? and ykno he can lose money

no where in the rules does it say that you cannot do commissions for money.

it says you cannot do trade money for onsite things. art should not fall under 'onsite items'

i have no problem with the main rule, its the application of that rule that imo should be clarified/changed.

you do have a point with your second sentence. i understand the thing w not trading for virtual items, but art is not anywhere near that and shouldn’t be in that category, if it turns out it is

maybe someone can get a hold of kaj and he can specifically clarify what he means/refers to ?

The rules can sometimes be fuzzy like that.

It makes sense why we can't do it on here as if anything bad happens mods/kaj can't do anything to help out since the trade was in 'currency' that VP doesn't deal with. Kaj likely has this rule in place so no one other than himself can use VP as a platform for profit.

I'm unfamiliar with Devian Art, but is it possible to message users on there and make commission?

i think it would probs be ok if people just post a link to their art  and say that they sell it too  so the selling is an ~afterthought~ type thing   and  the   talking about their art is the main topic

I think it's kiiinda ridiculous for banning such thing? We should be able to post anything freely while it's not even harming the site or anyone, whether vp deals with it or not, it's still our own responsibility to spend money on it or not.

true, i think the regulation of what happens if something goes awry is definitely something to consider (ie if someone scams another person, should they also be banned from vp?)

but that could easily be dealt with by saying 'buy commissions with usd at your own risk'.

If someone scams another user using currency that is not part of VP there is nothing mods/kaj can do.

to those unfamiliar, DeviantArt is really super useful for commisions

as much as i absolutely hate the rule, i can understand why it's in place since vp is (compared to other dressup sites) a small community with an owner that has little legal understanding

if kaj were to have someone file a lawsuit against him because they got scammed out of $30 from a commission and the user deleted their account after scamming, he wouldn't really be able to do anything about it (and even if they did keep their account, he couldn't get you the money back- he could only ban them)

i do think promoting tumblrs/instagrams/etc. where you take art commissions should be allowed, since the transaction is technically happening on another site (one that is able to take a lawsuit without too much damage)
