 ReportHair [Tutorial]
HI.

***

I'd lik to clarify a few things before we start:

Program I used:
Easy Paint Tool SAI

Tablet I used:
Wacom Bamboo Fun Pen&Touch

You CAN follow all the steps using a mouse. It will be more difficult, though. It is IMPORTANT to check that the "Size" and "Density" options are ticked in the "Pressure" option (Tool>Advanced settings>Pressure) for this to work with a mouse.

Love me, I made you a tutorial. :') This is basically a normal hair designing routine I do, this one is a semi-long wavy red hair. Not my best design, but it does explain the method. xD

So, LET'S START! :d

Step 1. Base.

Just like with any other design, you have to get a base. You can get the ones given by the site [here].
I only got the girl base, maybe I'll do a boy hair tut someday too. :)

Step 2. Base color.

Alright, time to get the shape of our hair! Make a new layer over your base. I draw a plain shape using the darkest color I want to be in the hair.

  Step 3. Defining.

Make a new layer over your hair layer. You can name them if you wish. Push the "Clipping mask" option. This will keep whatever you draw on that layer in the previous' layer limits, so that you will only be able to draw inside the hair shape.

Now pick a slightly lighter colorfrom the color wheel and start defining the strands that compound your hair. If you're using a tablet, try to always use your natural wrist pivot point, so that all the lines look smooth and flowy. Try to keep this path

Mouse users might want to check the "Stabilizer" option you can find at the top of your SAI document. It's a drop down. You should set it on a number between 5 and 15, this will smoothen out your lines and eliminate the shakiness.

My hair looks like this with the first layer of higlights applied. I am working with the Pen Tool at size 2.

Next, repeat the previous steps creating another Clipping Mask layer and choosing a lighter color. I would suggest lowering the size of your pen/brush with each extra layer, just so that it keeps it more defined.

Repeat the process again.

And again. :d

You can repeat it all as many times as you feel necessary, just try not to over-do.

 Step 4. Highlighting.

Now, you are going to create a new Clipping Mask layer and you're going to select the option "Luminosity" or "Add", depends on your SAI.

Without changing color, define the parts of te hair that you want the light t be fully shining on.

Now, set the opacity of the layer to a nice level (mine's usually halfway down).

Make a new layer and setit to Luminosity again, this time, the opacity will be even lower.   Paint on it with the Airbrush Tool   on the areas that you highlighted earlier.

Step 5. Flyaway hairs.

We all know that a natural looking hair has got some flyaway hairs, right? Make a new layer, but don't clip it this time.  Add them randomly on the edges. Then, create another layer and add them over the hair itself.

Step 5. Shading.

Make a layer under the flyaway layers and clip it.
Take the Airbrush Tool again and pick a color that is darker than your base one. Brush over the areas that shouldn't be very lit (such as behind the shoulders area).

Step 6. Polishing and retouching.

Merge down all the layers in a single one that is clipped to the hair. Then merge those two together aswell.

Open the Brightness/Contrast dialogue (Filter>Brightness/Contrast) and make the adjustments you like.

If you wish to change the hair color or you want to do severan copies of it in different colors duplicate the hair layer (Layer>Copy) and change the color by bringing up the Hue/Saturation dialogue [Ctrl+U] (Filter>Hue/Saturation).

Then move the duplicate around to wherever you like. Make as many copies as you want from the original hair
layer.

Finished:

I hope this was somewhat helpful or at least helped you understand how do I design. :)

Any requests for the next blog? :d

I think I changed the colors it was available in and sent it to the shops, but idk if they put it there already or not. And yup, I know that feeling of being like "Wow, looks easy, I'll try." and then you go "This is bullshit xD"

Could you do a tutorial on boots or shoes?

Wow, yeah, sure, 'cause I'm SUCH A PRO at shoes. xD I'm not that good at them, actually. I'll try, though. :3

The final hair looks like something that would be in one of those popular dress-up games c:

Thank you! I made it like that because it was the most requested, the curls and waves and all that stuff. Wanted to add some ombre to it, but i was already spending too much time on this xD
