Far from the outskirts of the forested land
Was a prosperous city all built by hand
Yet humans were absent in this world of color,
Instead were balloons unlike any other

And here grew a child whose color was clear

In the form of a helium pump was he,
A gift from the gods that was meant to be

“With your innocent wish have you summoned me,

“To be eye-catchingly pretty: a pink, a red?”

But then came a thought: ‘The sun, the sun!’
“I wish to be yellow, to stun everyone!
Into the sky, shining and bright
I wish to be, yes, everyone’s light!”

“Very well, come hither to me
I shall pump yellow by your decree.”

And so the balloon became brilliantly luminous—
A beautiful outcome from a wish’s fruitfulness

As the balloon was loved and adored
The love gathered became his paramour
To the hatred he felt for the ever-true light:
The sun became a center of his fright

To the helium pump he went
For his granted wish? Discontent.

He desired more—to be the sun
He wished to gleam above everyone

To have a dazzling appearance
Was his undying perseverance

Wishing to be as such: to shimmer and glimmer
So much so that his innocence grew dimmer

And who was the pump to deny a request?
To balloon’s aching words— an envying unrest
—the pump filled the balloon with fusion
A nuclear reaction to stop the balloon’s delusions

“Your foolish mind does not appreciate my blessings
And your unbecoming demands shall be your moral undressing.”

The balloon understood not the pump’s warning words
And continued its envy of the being amongst the birds
And unbeknownst to the balloon’s own righteous self
A growing explosion would soon hit the shelf

Oh, mighty science, how powerful is thee
To be the end of someone’s glee—
The punishment of an envying sea
Or perhaps, the destiny of a sinful plea?
