It's in the DSM. It's an abnormality in the brain. That makes it mental illness. Doesn't mean that's a bad thing. But anything not neurotypical is in the DSM.

The words illness and disorder are used interchangeably in the field of psychology.

Depression is a disorder. Not decelopmental. It is a disorder.
