im joking. but i do think its pointless to have empathy for everyone. there is little i could do for them anyway, it will just cost me energy and time that i dont have to give.

Empathy can also make people do evil. “Atrocities are typically motivated by stories of suffering victims—stories of white women assaulted by blacks, stories of German children attacked by Jewish pedophiles," Bloom said. It also can lure countries into violent conflicts based on relatively small provocations, and researchers have shown that people who are more empathetic are more likely to want to impose harsh punishments on people. “The more empathy you have, the more violent you are—the more ready and willing you are to cause pain,” Bloom said.

thats interesting, but it seems like their empathy is misguided and used in the wrong way.

I think empathy and compassion have a place, but they're over-hyped and can even be used for evil.

They argue in the rest of the article that the zooming in affect is the problem, particularly because people tend to have empathy for those who resemble themselves. They suggest compassion and helping others on a wide scale- effective altruism.

This quote I like:

“Go after not what gives you buzz, but what really helps other people."

People preach compassion and empathy all the time but it's on such a shallow level. I think people prefer the idea of being empathetic more so than actually doing something that reduces human suffering. It's easy to think you did good but in reality you did nothing, or even caused accidental harm.

i disagree, especially in a time where people like to try to come across as edgy [mainly online]. if people could put themselves in others' shoes more often, i think the world would be a much more pleasant place to live in.

interesting. does he have a study or cite one? I'm curious on how this was evaluated. I can see the logic behind it, but I wonder if people who resort to violence are more reactive or anger/unpleasant-feeling prone than other individuals are.
