Anachronism wrote: Empathy can also make people do evil. “Atrocities are typically motivated by stories of suffering victims—stories of white women assaulted by blacks, stories of German children attacked by Jewish pedophiles," Bloom said. It also can lure countries into violent conflicts based on relatively small provocations, and researchers have shown that people who are more empathetic are more likely to want to impose harsh punishments on people. “The more empathy you have, the more violent you are—the more ready and willing you are to cause pain,” Bloom said.
interesting. does he have a study or cite one? I'm curious on how this was evaluated. I can see the logic behind it, but I wonder if people who resort to violence are more reactive or anger/unpleasant-feeling prone than other individuals are.
he wrote a book. I'm busy atm but when I have more time I will delve into this more.
I think you asked a very valid question! I also think he's not necessarily arguing against empathy (although that's what he titled his book because provocative titles sell better) but for a more well thought out sort of empathy (what Peter Singer would call effective altruism.)

overrated as a value
there are plenty of ways to help others without being charitable, like technology. You could almost argue technology helps more people than charity. Yet both can be detrimental depending on execution.

We aren’t necessarily empaths for relating to people in movies, just to set the record straight. If that is what you emploed ofc. The movies at made for us to feel and relate, with at lot of aids like setting the mood with light/music etc.
