Just a quick note— while I'll try my best to not reveal spoilers, some aspects of the plot will have to be revealed a bit in order for me to write an in depth review.

Divergent


It seems I'm in the boat of the Unpopular Opinion once again. It makes me wonder if I'm reading the same book as everyone else.

Plot: Divergent had potential. The storyline was fairly intriguing and if Divergent was in the hands of someone who thought about important things such as character development, and had the ability to stay away from clichés, then it'd probably be worth reading. I can clearly see it as a mix of Harry Potter's Houses and the Districts of The Hunger Games all screwed up together and that shows how unoriginal it really is, not to mention the illogical plot points and plot holes.

World Building/Writing: I'm surprised that many have claimed Divergent to be well written. I found Veronica Roth’s writing style immature. Her descriptions lacked important details and her imagery sucked to say the least. I could barely picture the settings or anything else for that matter. The world building was barely existent and had no realism at all. The whole concept of it was a bit too unrealistic for me. Dystopian worlds represents a possible future of society with different rules and I don't believe that we'd ever separate ourselves by one virtue and that's partly because of the lack of world building, descriptions, and explanations. I feel she says this and that but she doesn’t describe when and why clearly.

Pace: I felt like it was extremely fast paced. There was no time lapse when reading. This would happen and then that would happen and that really annoyed me. Tris seemed to pick up training incredibly fast, for example. For a nearly five hundred page book, it had nothing good in it. I kept waiting and waiting but it never came. Oh and Tris is apparently a sixteen year old girl who haven't quite gone through puberty yet and isn't even pretty. But of course Four, yes his name is Four, the badass who just so happen to be the hottest around thinks she's perfect and falls in love with her. No build up. Instant love. Sounds familiar?

Is Divergent anything like The Hunger Games? Yes, both books are about teenage girls living in dystopian worlds and that's just where the similarities end.

Divergent is most definitely overrated in my opinion.

The cover was probably the best thing about it.
